This beautifully written novel struck me as a complex character study. The main characters are fully developed. They come across as multidimensional, viewed in the past, the present and a possible future. The reader sees them alone, together and with other important characters. The story arc is clear. As they fall apart as a couple, real life implodes.
I hope that Lookout Butte finds its readership. I can't be the only one enjoying this book. It deserves to be reviewed and discussed. Novelists who dare to dig for meaning, in the chaos of life, are brave and affirming. Art clarifies what we know to be true, without any religious overtones - Do unto others as you'd have them do unto you.
I am especially intrigued with the dream sequences and will be studying them closely.
Now to the two main characters...they were a jumble of messes...Alex a jealous, over worked girlfriend and Kat a bit indifferent to it all. But the thing about their story is there wasn't enough to connect or feel for the characters. Like I mentioned, a lot of extra stuff. Kat spent more time with her family and David and Alex spent so much time at the home.
I don't know...this was a kU book and I always like giving them a read. If you have something on your list to read, then I would skip this one. If you've got a few hours to kill and want to make your own discussion (which one should always do) then by all means.
