I'd recommend sticking to the basic Fluxx, if they even sell it any more. It looks like they even added complexity to Fluxx 4.0 that might cause the same problem. The entire idea of Fluxx is complicated enough that it doesn't need ambiguity like this piled on top of it.
To win, a player must meet a goal's conditions (s/he wins even if it is someone else's turn). To play a goal, a player places it up in the center of the table discarding any previous goals. Thus, you can be on your way to a win one minute, and light years away from winning a minute later.
Most goals require keepers to win, and players must play them in order to win, but by doing so you will put keepers at risk, others can take them and creepers (cards that usually prevent you from winning) can be attached to them.
In addition, to the above cards, players can play surprise and action cards, that change the game and might have different outcome if played during your turn, or during someone else's turn.
Over all Fluxx is a great game for 2-6+ players, it takes about 30 minutes, and in my opinion plays better with a large group.
If you've never played a Fluxx game before, no worries, it's super simple to learn. A whacky game of "do what the cards tell you", no game will ever be the same. The rules change as often as the goal. Are you trying to assemble an Away Mission party? Or maybe you're trying to find the time traveling doctor? Either way, better do it before someone changes the Keeper limit or gives you a brain parasite. While Star Fluxx has the more "advanced" Creepers and Surprise cards, the game is still quick to pick up and learn. I recommend this version for any sci-fi fans out there, of any age. This is a GREAT family game, too.
Not a fan of sci-fi? Try Looney Labs Fluxx Monty Python Fluxx Looney to get your fill of British humor and silly accents. Want something educational? Fluxx EcoFluxx is a great game for teaching basic environmental science. Pirates? Pirate Fluxx. Zombies? Zombie Fluxx. Martians? Fluxx Martian Fluxx. Or, just go for the classic original: Fluxx 4.0.
Then I played with the family, 9yo girl and 8yo boy. They loved it as well. I will be picking up some of the other Fluxx games that might be more to the liking of the kids.
