My daughter loves making bracelets, and we have probably 3-5 bracelet makers. This is the best we've found. I would definitely recommend it.
My main issue with it - and has been right out of the box - is that it seems to be made almost entirely of plastic. And CHEAP plastic at that. I made several bracelets with it and on about the 5th one I noticed the wheel was harder to turn than it had been. It's an enclosed device. You're not supposed to oil anything or take it apart, so I kept going, just more slowly. At about the tenth bracelet I heard a lovely snap inside and knew something had broken. I set it aside and took it apart a few weeks later. Being mildly mechanically inclined, I was able to glue the inside plastic back together and reinforce it with a resin I was pretty darn sure was stronger than the plastic itself, and get it working again. I still really wanted this thing to work!! And it did. For approximately 12 more bracelets. (Not all made at one time, either.)
After those new bracelets I heard a very annoying grating sound. Their bearing holder (or whatever you want to call it) had broken - on the opposite side this time. The handle locked completely up. I was so darn determined I was going to make this work that I fixed that side, as well. The bracelets are FUN to make. (When this stupid thing works!)
Needless to say, it broke a third time after just a few more bracelets. I don't even know where the problem is. I did take it apart a third time and both of my rigged sides have held. Yay to my awesome fixing skills, LOL! However, the shaft didn't turn, nor did the handle. I'm patient when I really want to be. But not this patient. Before I pitched it I even noticed the plastic hook on the end was cracked!!! OMG! What else could have gone wrong with this thing?! It's now in the trash - and I consider that a huge waste. Considering they likely outsource the making of this to China or similar, they don't need to be charging so much for this. It belongs in the $10-$15 range so buyers don't ever expect it to last. For what they charged they could have found a US manufacturer and used QUALITY materials. I'm so disappointed in it....truly the concept was very innovative. :( It's my sincere hope they switch manufacturers, or charge much less. Or both. For those that are crafty - you can make your own version of this for half the price this was, and SOLID construction that will last darn near a lifetime, if you don't mind the look of wood, metal, and a few gears. ;)
Quick, and easy to get started, fun enough that the kids are happy to keep trying to improve their technique. If the younger ones are finding it frustrating, some adult assistance may help. Play together, or teach them and let them experiment, depending on age and capability.
