Despite my reservations, I stuck with the book a little longer and found that my first impressions weren't accurate. Well, with regard to the H, they weren't far off. He really didn't seem to have any purpose or ambition at all. Of the four younger brothers, we later became acquainted with three at length and one in passing, and they did have goals that were being stymied by the insecurity of the oldest, titled brother.
But Reggie, the H? Not so much. His only goal was to marry the h, who had inherited money from a recently deceased relative. Her goal was to avoid fortune hunters among members of the ton who hadn't found her as enticing before her inheritance. Which, as far as she was concerned, included Reggie. And let's face it, Reggie was a little dull, and clueless. But the h was pretty clueless herself when it came to the dashing guy she had fallen for. And when exactly the H and h actually fell in love was unclear. It was mostly a case of absence making the heart grow fonder on her side.
So, my opinion changed drastically over the course of the book, about the tone, the plot and mainly the characters, in a positive way. The main romantic plot was resolved without a cliffhanger. However, there are plot points, especially regarding what happened to the family money, and an unexpected half-brother, that were left hanging. Since the other books are also on Kindle Unlimited right now, that's not a problem for me.
To all fans of regency Era romantic fiction, this is one to be enjoyed. Lord Reginald has fallen in love with Robinia, an heiress of fortune. There is also a mystery involving his brother Lord Carrbridge's estate agent. At times quite funny.
I enjoy reading many different types of books and ones written in this historical timeline are some of my favorites.
It was a pleasure to read this author's work. You will not be sorry to have read this delightful book. Highly recommended.
