- Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2011This was my second attempt to buy a decent unabridged recording of LotRs, and this time, using Amazon, was a complete success. I had tried Ebay previously and had wound up opening the box and discovering I'd actually bought the series on cassette tapes. I had no idea cassette tapes were even offered on the market anymore, so I obviously missed an important little detail in the product description, which was my fault. Two of the tapes then self-destructed the first time through. You can't listen to the whole Lord of the Rings trilogy within a seller's seven day grace period (and lead a normal life), so I was stuck with an expensive defective product. And the manufacturer, Recorded Books, I then learned, would not replace individual tapes purchased from a third party. I tried afterward to purchase a replacement set directly through Recorded Books Inc., but their brand new website in conjunction with another company would not let me navigate to a page for purchasing a copy at that time. I tried Amazon after that because my previous unrelated purchases had all gone extremely smoothly. This purchase also was. I have finally completed listening to all of the cd's of LotRs bought through Amazon, and am as happy with the purchase as I am cautious with taking special care of each of the cd's from the series.
As for the product itself - this is by far the best audio version of The Lord of the Rings. I own an abridged production commonly available, by the way, and unless you are about 6 years old, you probably won't enjoy the cringe-worthy over-dramatization. And if you are fond of the book, you won't like the editing decisions in an abridged version either.
The best readers and productions, I think, do not intrude on and overwhelm a story; they let the story seem to speak through them. Rob Engles does that in this production of LotRs and in his The Hobbit, which you should also buy - actually, personally, I think his The Hobbit is even better than his Lord of the Rings. Just be sure to buy the cd's and not casstte tapes, buy from a reputable seller on Amazon or directly from Recorded Books, and take especially good care of all of the cd's once you get them.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2022We purchased this used and the cds themselves are all in working order. The cover is slightly worn but it does not affect anything. Rob Inglis is a wonderful voice talent, like having your old grandfather read Tolkien to you. His voices occasionally melt together but it does not break the immersion in the story. Our seven year old son is absolutely entranced. We prefer Inglis’ middle earth to that of Serkis’ as Serkis’ voice tends toward that of a long time smoker and someone who knows he is here to do the iconic voice of Gollum, make some other silly noises and get paid. It’s difficult to stay immersed when you hear it, though he certainly does have the iconic voice of Gollum, unless you were raised in the 70’s or 80’s as my husband and I were and the Rankin and Bass Gollum voice was the first you’d ever heard. Inglis does a terrific job and we couldn’t be happier with our purchase, and the fact that we saved so much by purchasing the hugely discounted used version makes us even more so.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2003READ MY LIPS: There are many recorded versions of The Lord of the Rings, and Amazon gets the reviews mixed up. THIS REVIEW is ONLY for the unabridged (52-hour) version READ BY ROB INGLIS, even if Amazon has attached this review to a different version by mistake. Do NOT buy the BBC (which is good) or NPR "full-cast" acted versions if you want the UNABRIDGED, one reader version. Make sure it says it is "Read by Rob Inglis" (He's really good.) This review was originally written in 2003, so the Rob Inglis version on CD may be hard to find, but you can find the Rob Inglis-read books individually on Audible. But they have to say Rob Inglis, because Aubible has other "dramatized" versions that ARE NOT THE FULL LENGTH BOOKS. I waited many years to get the full version. In addition to reading the book, I have often listened to the excellent 13-hour BBC radio production (also highly recommended) but wanted the full text as Professor Tolkien wrote it. My rating for the book content is, of course, fully five stars. It is unique and wonderful. For reader Rob Inglis, also very good marks: he is a very clear, warm dramatic reader who does well at creating the various voices, without overdoing it. I've listened to hundreds of audio books, and would rate Rob Inglis in the top 15 percent of readers. (He's not a great singer but renders the many songs in the book pleasantly, as a hobbit might.) The audio quality of the original tape set, recorded in 1991, was good, but not as perfect as modern techniques now allow. I highly recommend this wonderful addition to the ways to enjoy the book. For those who have only seen the magnificent movies, there are many surprises and additions here that are not in the movies. Don't miss it. 52-hours of genuine Prof. Tolkien writing. Great fun.

I have been trying to re-read The Lord of the Rings (TLOTR) but time just did not permit. I got these and copied them to mp3 and listened in the car. Good narration, and it's the entire book - I even made it through the appendices, which even big fans can understand are difficult to read through. I bought these used which was way better than new since I converted them to digital in my car. If you can get a digital copy, go for that too!

the return of the kingの最後には、参考資料とでも言いましょうか、それぞれのキャラクターの歴史や、指輪を破壊したあと、どうなったのかといったことが歴史書っぽく語られていて、物語を理解するのに役立ちます。
Amazon CustomerReviewed in Canada on April 6, 20135.0 out of 5 stars Great Listening
This is the unabridged recording with Robert Inglis and is well read and paced appropriately. However, I later found out that you can get this on iTunes for less if you are willing to forego the CD.

EilidhReviewed in Germany on November 10, 20045.0 out of 5 stars Für englischverstehende LotR-Fans
