The CDs were shipped in very secured package. The item was delivered earlier than expected. We like the music.
It has three discs including 13 soundtracks in CD1 (The fellowship of the ring), 13 in CD 2 (The two towers) & 12 in CD3 (The return of the king).

Another viewer incorrectly stated that this was played by a "medicore orchestra" this is not an orchestra at all, it is a guy and his synthesizers. (who apparently goes by the code name: MASK"

I would save the money you would spend on this and buy the 2 disc set from Silva with the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Nic Raine, that is of course assuming you already have the original soundtracks and are looking for it being played by a different orchestra.

I came across this recording on Amazon while searching for the real thing. I see many who think this CD is the worst thing since homework. I agree more ought to be done to make clear this is NOT a recording of an orchestra. In fact, I don't see details of performance anywhere in the Amazon advertisement. Only after reading several reviews did it become clear this is music performed by a synthesizer. I have heard worse, barely.

Now I'm curious and I might just well purchase this weird CD for my collection.

Many musicians use every day now computer programs such as "Finale 2010 Academic" and "Sibelius 6 Professional" to prepare music for performance by real people. Both are available through Amazon. These programs include sophisticated music synthesizers which can produce performances much better than the samples I heard from the CD above.

Synthesizers have played an important role in the development of music since mid-twentieth century. Early electronic composers, as they were rightly called back in the 1950's, used any means available to produce the timbres they wanted. Some used electronic means to modify existing sounds - "Musique concrete." A FEW composers from this period include: Edgard Varèse, Iannis Xenakis, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Vladimir Ussachevsky.

Others used devices which generated sound electronically. The "Theremin," "Ondes Martenot," and the "Moog Synthesizer" come to mind. Olivier Messiaen used the "Theremin" and the "Ondes Martenot " in several works - my favorite is the "Trois Petites Liturgies de la Présence Divine", available on Amazon. One well known composer, Walter Carlos (now known as Wendy Carlos) used the" Moog Synthesizer" to create the "Switched-On Bach", "The Well-Tempered Synthesizer" and several others also available through Amazon. Musicians in New York City used the innovative equipment at the "Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center" into the 1970's, notably by the prolific American Composer Charles Wuorinenin his Pulitzer Prize winning "Time's Encomium."

Music for the popular TV series "DOCTOR WHO" originated in the "BBC Radiophonic Workshop."

This is a tiny retrospective on the very early days of electronic music. What we take for granted now was very difficult to achieve given the equipment available from ca 1940 to the invention of the Moog Synthesizer. We now use MIDI devices and don't think about the creativity that led to a synthesizer in many PC's and countless other places in 21st century life.

OK, this is not the full orchestrated version of The Lord of the Rings. However, some songs do include some backup from the City of Prague Symphony Orchestra and the Crouch Festival Chorus. Granted, many songs are only Mask's synthesizer, but for a synth recording, it's really not that bad. Think of Rick Wakeman's recordings or Vangelis or Tangerine Dream. if you're a purist, this is certainly not acceptable, but I rather like it for what it is. I got it at a used record store anyway, didn't cost me much.

This product has been what I expected it to be and and it has been very useful for its purpose

I wasn't sure how many stars to give because it turns out I missed teh fine-print. This is *not* the score as performed by an orchestria. This is, instead, performed on a synthesizer. Personally I dislike it (and I do like some synthesized classices) and just tossed it.

For people who *know* the above fact, I have no idea how to rate this.
