There are few things I enjoy reading more than Philip Jose Farmer writing a Tarzan-like character. Especially when written from the Jungle Lord's perspective and inside his head. "Lord of the Trees" features Lord Grandrith, the feral ape-man from Farmer's cult hit
A Feast Unknown (Secrets of the Nine #1 - Wold Newton Parallel Universe) (Memoirs of Lord Grandrith)
. He is cured from the ailments brought about by the immortality elixir and is steadfast on bringing revenge on the Nine.
Farmer writes a feral ape-man for the modern age. If you are interested in a more realistic portrayal of an intelligent, yet feral man then this book is for you. While some people are put off by
A Feast Unknown (Secrets of the Nine #1 - Wold Newton Parallel Universe) (Memoirs of Lord Grandrith)
and its sexually explicit content, fear not. Neither of its sequels "Lord of the Trees" or
The Mad Goblin (Secrets of the Nine #3 - Wold Newton Parallel Universe)
contain that material. It would not be difficult to read them on their own as good Doc Savage or Tarzan pastiche's. Readers who enjoyed Farmer's
Lord Tyger (Grandmaster Series) (Grand Master Novels (Titan Books))
should also give this a read.
"Lord of the Trees" is not short on action, as Grandrith uses all of his skills while attempting to exterminate the surviving members of the Nine. The scenes where he combines his jungle awareness with a machine gun are especially fun.
This is a fast pace tale of adventure that fans of any ape-man will enjoy.

The straight (non porn) sequel to Farmer's legendary A FEAST UNKNOWN was originally a paperback original, but has become a classic in it's own right. The novel is part of a duet with THE MAD GOBLIN, in which Lord Grandith and Doc Caliban pursue their war against the Nine. LOTT is splendidly written and moves at an incredible pace from the moment Grandrith is blown out of his private plane at 5,000 feet over the African beach where he began to the final reckoning with the Nine.
This and its prequel were the basis of the Wold Newton stories and tales that are still going strong, tying characters from past fiction together in a vast never ending story of the secret interconnectivity of our world. In Farmer's hands it is more than merely a good tale well told, but also a first rate science fiction concept with great complexity beneath the sheer fun of the concept. By all means read this with Farmer's TARZAN ALIVE, LORD TYGER, DOC SAVAGE: HIS APOCALYPTIC LIFE, and the other related works. It is farmer not only at his most playful, but his most playfully serious.

Tarzan of the Apes has always been my all time favorite fictional character, and no-one outside of Edgar Rice Burroughs himself, understands the Ape-man BETTER than Philip Jose' Farmer.
Continuing the adventures of a sort of 'Alternate Universe' Tarzan, that was begun in his previous novel, A Feast Unknown', Mr. Farmer shows that no matter WHAT the setting, WHAT the environment, The famous king of the Jungle can carry ANY story.
The extra treats, as anyone who has closely read the stories of Philip Jose' Farmer knows, are the rich tapestries that are woven throughout everything he has written, leaving clues here and there that point to a literary universe beyond the scope of any adventure writers/World builders before him, guaranteed to blow your mind.
Add all of this to a clever wit and insight into the real human condition that is only rivaled by geniuses like Kurt Vonnegut and George Carlin.
I highly recommend reading the whole series!

Philip Jose Farmer introduced me to the world of pulp, especially Doc Savage and Tarzan. PJF, a Granmaster of Science Fiction, created an alternative pulp world, one far more intense and realistic than ever written to that date. This tale, Lord of Trees, tells the story of Lord Grandrith and his battle against the ancient immortals who manipulated his life from before his birth. This is a fast, exciting story that I have happily read many times. I recommend this book to all readers who love adventure, pulp or just well-written tales.
Other books in the series include:
1. A Feast Unknown
2. Lord Of the Trees
3. The Mad Goblin

Much different than the first novella in the trilogy. A little less descriptive violence and no sex, but then the time frame is different. The first book covers several weeks, this one actually covers, from my estimate, less than a week. It is much more concise in that respect. Great follow-up.

Sequel to A Feast Unknown. Written as single first person narrative (without chapters or other breaks). Lacks the erotic content of A Feast Unknown. This is non-stop thrill ride of pulp adventure and ultra-violence. This is great stuff. This book will keep you up all night.

I was eager to learn the history of a vast majority of our super intelligent heroes and some with super human physical strength. And to also out that some were virtually immortal was even more fascinating. I am looking forward experiencing the stories from the Wold Newton series.
