    I am now fifty-two years old. I live in the heart of rural Suffolk. As I sit here at my desk, I can look across the fields from my window to a wood which has been there since the dawn of time. A Roman street once ran across the fields behind my house. There has been a church in the village for a thousand years. When I sit in there, with the current community, I am in a place where Saxons, Normans and Danes once sat, and since them the folk who tilled the fields through the middle ages, who saw Tudor kings and queens, Civil War, Empire and two world wars, the latter of which saw the village dwarfed by an American army camp. It's probably the timeless feel of this place which feeds my love of history and prompted me to write my 'Angelcynn' series.

    By day I dismantle old buildings tile by tile, brick by brick, and beam by beam, saving these wonderful old materials from the bull-dozer and cleaning them up to be re-used. We sometimes find where a, now long dead, craftsman signed his work, or the Roman numerals that the carpenter carved on the beams to indicate whereabouts they needed to go in the construction. Occasionally we find the remains of a cat. The creatures were 'bricked in' when the buildings were raised in order to ward off evil. More often we'll find a prayer, rolled up and inserted in a hollow in the brickwork.

    All of this convinces me that the past is part of us and it is well worth remembering. It's who we are and it gives us stability and helps us look to the future with confidence.
