For instance, raving about one taco truck (which really is good, I've eaten there), Elliott says "There's the colorful paint job, the bright lights strung along the top of the cab and an LED screen that scrolls slowly above the windshield displaying the options (and the quality) offered on board. What really puts Tacos Cuernavaca in a different league, though, is the menu."
See how idiotic this is? Yes, it's a good taco truck, but actually, every taco truck has a colorful paint job, bright lights, and an LED screen, or at least 2 out of 3 of them. He does this kind of thing for all his taco trucks. Who cares? Obviously the menu puts it in a different league or it wouldn't belong in the book. Other times, Elliott is just wrong. For instance, he says that Ricky's Fish Tacos (which should be a Los Angeles historical monument by now) is "open midday, primarily weekends." Well, that's just wrong. Ricky's is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, but that doesn't add up to "primarily weekends." Their hours are pretty stable, too, and are available on their Yelp page.
Anyway, as long as you know that what you're getting is a guidebook which will be outdated next year, there's nothing wrong with this book except for the C+ prose-style and the icky closeup photos of tacos. I found some places I didn't know about, and they were good, but I'd have found them on the web if I'd looked. I don't know, essentially I'm sorry I bought this book.
