Los Lonely Boys ~ Los Lonely Boys
Amazon.com
California's Los Lobos are the reigning kings of Tex-Mex/Rock Espanol. But this debut CD by the San Angelo, Texas band Los Lonely Boys might herald a changing of the guard. This is truly a band of brothers, led by guitarist/vocalist Henry Garza and his younger, bass-and-drum-playing siblings Jojo and Ringo. Like a lot of groups, they had to move away to achieve fame--in their case, to Nashville. But after the release of their EP, Willie Nelson heard them, put them on tour as his opening act, and recorded them at his studio. Stylistically, the Garza brothers' bilingual songs about love and life combine Stevie Ray Vaughan blues, Santana-style guitar licks and R&B. Nelson helps out on guitar, with Reese Wynans on keyboards. Produced by Keb Mo and B.B. King producer John Porter, the music is honest, driving, and down home, especially on the organ-filled uptempo tracks "Senorita" and "Tell Me Why." The stinging guitar solo on the Afro-anthemic "Onda" recalls the '70s grooves Santana built his chops on, while "The Answer" and "More than Love" are raw power ballads that show off this group's dynamism and diversity. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

While their album is not to be missed (they played all the cuts from it when I saw them) the album and its studio production does not even come close to doing these extraodinarily talented brothers justice. The sound these three guys are able to produce in a live performance will blow you away.
Lead guitarist Henry Garza takes a back seat to no one, not even fellow Texan Stevie Ray Vaughn himself. In my humble opinion Henry Garza has Stevie Ray beat. He can coax sounds from that Strat that makes it sound as if two people were playing. His fingers moving over the strings so fast at times they are nothing but a blur.
Younger brother JoJo is a young phenom on the Hohner six string bass as well. JoJo is probably one of the most talented young bassists playing today. From me that's saying alot because I'm a big Tower of Power fan, and as such, have always greatly admired the acclaimed bass-playing talent of Rocco Prestia. Yet JoJo, who I doubt is half Rocco's age, has all of Rocco's talent and maybe even then some.
Youngest brother Ringo (yes that's his real name) drives the bus with the drumming duties which he handles without a hitch. And if you're not convinced as to Ringo's talent just wait 'till later on in the show.
Buy the album? Most definitely! But give yourself a real musical treat and go and see these guys live and in living color. I guarantee you'll be glad you did. They are worth the price of admission just for their encore alone. I won't spill the beans about it here. You need to go see it for yourself. Just when you think they have given you their all, they will absolutely amaze you with their playing prowess and showmanship. They definitely leave everything out on the stage. Its even more impressive when you consider just how young these three brothers are. They have to definitely be one of the hottest acts on tour right now.
I don't know what these guys were drinking when they were growing up, but they drank in a Texas-sized dose of talent and showmanship. I'm quite sure we'll be hearing much more from the Los Lonely Boys.
Their album features some straightforward honest lyrics, beautiful melodic harmonies, outstanding bass riffs and santana-ish drumming. The guitar player, Henry is very reminiscent of the late-great Stevie Ray but I also hear Eric Clapton and even some Hendrix stylizations in there.
I think they are being classified as a country band (since Willie Nelson produced them).I am not a huge fan of country music as a whole (although I appreciate many of the talented country music artists) - and I wouldn't consider these guys country at all. Nor would you totally consider them a Tex-mex or Santana band -they are really in a class of their own bringing in all their wonderful influences into an entirely new genre of music.
This is the first album I've owned in about 20 years that I've liked every song on the album...when's the last time YOU could say that??
What amazes me most is the ages of these brothers. Ringo the drummer is 22, JoJo the most incredible 6 string bass player I've ever seen is 24 and Henry, 26 makes his guitar magical. They write, sing, play and even change instruments in the middle of shows. Sometimes you don't even notice! Just take some SRV, add a little Carlos Santana and then some of their own unique blues style and gosh knows what we'll hear when they hit their 30's or 40's!! Buy the DVD Los Lonely Boys - Texican Style (Live from Austin)~! You won't regret it!!
I miss SRV, Arc Angels, Storyville and many other local bands that were cut short by tragedy or other reasons. If you get a chance, pick up some Vallejo. They are harder edged but incredible and my second favorite to LLB!! Also check out Pushmonkey and Podunk. If you step out of our borders, check out Indigenous. They are an awesome hard edged blues band as well.
