This is the book that I'vebeen wanting to write for a long time. Why? Because water fasting transformedmy life more than 10 years ago. If you've read any of my other books, then youknow the sob story. I was obese and trapped in a destructive cycle of bingeeating. I had lost all hope for a better life and locked myself in a trash-filledapartment to eat myself to death. It was at that dark moment that I firstthought of fasting.
Out of nowhere, the idea came to me that I had to stopeating for 30 days so my mind, body and spirit could detox and heal. I hadvaguely heard of water fasting in the past, but it wasn't anything that I was intimatelyfamiliar with. In desperation, I threw away the last of the pizza and beer; I beganto fast. Things did not go very well. Six hours later, I was stricken withintense hunger, nausea and headaches. Fear and rage weren't too far behind. Needlessto say, the acute physical and mental symptoms took me down for the count; twohours later I was at the nearest donut shop gorging (medicating).
I had tried to diet manytimes and always ended up binging. So this latest debacle was really nothingnew. But something WAS different. I was intrigued by thecavalcade of symptoms that had emerged. Having worked as a writer andresearcher, I was filled with a million questions about fasting. I rememberthinking: "I have only not eaten ina few hours. Why am I feeling so physically and emotionally sick? What in theworld is going on?" I felt likethe drug addict who ran out of dope and had gone into withdrawal."What?" I said aloud. "Could fasting have incited some kind ofwithdrawal? But why? How is that possible?"
I became a man on a mission. Idevoured countless books on fasting, both religious and secular. I wanted toknow what happens to the body when one fasts.Over a period of 18 months, I gathered volumes of informationabout water fasting, juice fasting, dry fasting, liquid diet fasting, religiousfasting and intermittent fasting.I felt that I hadfound the truth and discovered a solution to my sickness and obesity. What wasthe truth? It was not very flattering, but I came to realize that I was a Food Addict. I saw my life with unprecedented clarity.
"Robert," I said to myself,"you're a full-blown food addict. You need to do a 30-day water fast tolose weight and purge your body of the trash you've been eating for so manyyears." The plan was set. I started my first 'official' water fast around March of 1998. I weighed myself on Day 1 and tipped thescales at 318 pounds. I'm six feet tall, so my ideal weight is195 to 210 pounds. I needed to lose in excess of 100 pounds!
It was very tough forthe first two weeks; hunger, nausea, headaches, irritation and sleeplessnessassailed me. The mind was constantly inviting me to break the fast and givingme endless reasons why it was better to abort - for now. But I had crossed theline. I was so sick and tired of beingsick and tired that I grit my teeth and walked through the discomfort.On Day 40 ofthe fast, I got on the scale again. I closed my eyes tightly in fear of seeingnumbers that would mock my hard work. When I finally peeked with my right eye,the digital scale said that I weighed 258. I had lost 60 pounds in 40 days!
Altogether,it took me 18 months to lose the last 63 pounds. Why so long? Because, ratherthan fasting and fasting and fasting, I realized that I needed to adopt a clean and healthy structured diet. I had tolearn how to eat! I was willing to do whatever it took. I had proven to myself (more than once) that things never workedout when I was pigheaded and did it my way. I had to learn humility; I hadto reach out for help. And the effort has paid off in spades! Today, my weightfluctuates between 195 and 205. Beyond that, I haven't gained a single ounce back.
