Time after time the American military has failed to match loftydeclarations about its superiority, producing instead a mediocrerecord of military accomplishments. Starting from the Korean Warthe United States hasn’t won a single war against a technologicallyinferior, but mentally tough enemy. The technological dimension of American “strategy” hascompletely overshadowed any concern with the social, cultural, operational and even tactical requirements of military (andpolitical) conflict. With a new Cold War with Russia emerging, theUnited States enters a new period of geopolitical turbulencecompletely unprepared in any meaningful way—intellectually, economically, militarily or culturally—to face a reality which washidden for the last 70+ years behind the curtain of never-endingChalabi moments and a strategic delusion concerning Russia, whose history the US viewed through a Solzhenitsified caricaturekept alive by a powerful neocon lobby, which even todaydominates US policy makers’ minds. This book• explores the dramatic difference between the Russian andUS approach to warfare, which manifests itself across the wholespectrum of activities from art and the economy, to the respectivenational cultures;• illustrates the fact that Russian economic, military andcultural realities and power are no longer what American “elites”think they are by addressing Russia’s new and elevated capacitiesin the areas of traditional warfare as well as cyberwarfare andspace; and• studies in depth several ways in which the US can simplystumble into conflict with Russia and what must be done to avoid it.Martyanov’s former Soviet military background enables deepinsight into the fundamental issues of warfare and military poweras a function of national power—assessed correctly, not throughthe lens of Wall Street “economic” indices and a FIRE economy, but through the numbers of enclosed technological cycles andculture, much of which has been shaped in Russia by continentalwarfare and which is practically absent in the US.

This is a must read book.
This looks impressive, dominate and powerful. But after finishing Andre Martyanov's Losing Military Supremacy, here are some thoughts gleaned from the book. See Map at the bottom. In this book Martyanov explains how the United States military is more show than substance, how we have not won a war in 70 years and how we are living in a fantasy land from the perspective of real power. He compares the United States today to the Russia of the 1990s, when all Russia had to defend itself was nukes. Martyanov praises the US nuclear submarines, but says the US navy is vulnerable, and that our money spent on carriers was a waste as aircraft carrier groups represent WW2 thinking and are no longer efficacious, as they can be destroyed by supersonics before the carrier battle group gets close enough to threaten. He adds that Russia's new, less costly and quieter, diesel submarines (they have nuclear too) are a threat to US nuclear subs. Adding that our weapons are so complicated that they are not effective, are woefully high maintenance and not user friendly without an immense amount of training. And that in cases, like stealth, we have chosen the wrong technologies, as stealth is no longer stealthy or applicable. Martyanov notes that we remain a leading and powerful nation, but one that is trending paper tiger… a house of cards that would lose a war with Russia or China unless we used our nuclear weapons. After WW1 and WW2, the United States created a fable that our manufacturing won the war, more than fighting on the battlefield. We lost 500,000… the Russians lost soldier and civilian (if anyone can be called civilian in places like Stalingrad) over 20 million. 500,000 is a horror show lot, but nothing compared to over 20 million. China suffered in WW2. Russia suffered in WW2. The United States experienced overseas soldier death and rationing. From this perspective, the American psyche is, by comparison, insufficient when applied to war. Meanwhile, even if the US fable were true, today we have destroyed our manufacturing base. We cannot make enough fast enough to fight a real war against a real enemy. Martyanov explains a long sad list of money spent and money wasted, attributing this to bad choices, a lack of understanding of war and history, and to, scams, and greed, and a ruling class of poorly educated elites with no science backgrounds, and a defense industry more about getting rich than defending the nation. There is much more… For knowledge and thought, I recommend the book!

I am a Martyanov fan, having discovered his blog and YouTube channel in my search for straight-shooting information about the Russian SMO in Ukraine. This is the second of his books I've purchased, and it does not disappoint. The subject material is more relevant today to America's cultural and military decline than when written...and it's only gotten worse since the published date...MUCH worse. The author is a U.S. citizen living in the U.S., but he has extensive education and background, plus relevant experience in the old USSR and then Russian military apparatus. He is a NO-BS guy, which is sorely needed to make the assessments he offers. Very refreshing since we now live in a blizzard of lies delivered from our own government on EVERY subject, even when the truth would actually serve them better. It's become a habit they can't break. Since we no longer have mainstream media interested in doing little else than packaging these lies for public consumption, the odd truth-teller seems like an oracle. The quality of the writing in his books is very good, especially since English is his second language, but the one helpful criticism for him I would offer is "beware the run-on sentence." ;) I've fallen prey to this myself...your mind is racing ahead of your fingers to such an extent that you forget to end one sentence and start another. It doesn't detract from the message or material, but I'm trying to think how I could send him a box of periods for his next book (underway now, I believe.).
This book, like his others, is full of footnotes and source material references. He does his homework! I have the Kindle editions, and his books are perfect for the medium; I scarcely made it through a page without highlighting and annotating something. If you're interested in comparative military affairs, you'll be glad to have this book. His social and cultural commentary isn't gratuitous; it can't be separated from what has happened to our military. HIGHLY recommended.

Andrei Martyanov's work lives up to the legendary hype it has received in key intellectual circles. It is clear that he approaches his analysis with care and objectivity concerning both his homeland (Soviet Union or Russia) and his newfound home (America). He obviously does not want either nations to go to war and laments the decline of the United States. Myself as an American Slav as well, can see exactly the same things he is describing and I too lament them.

One of the biggest dangers to America is...America. It's delusions of grandeur have led the country into a downward spiral economically, culturally, and militarily: "the U.S. is following the steps of the Soviet Union, it is undergoing the phase of a non-violent Balkanization."

Martyanov clearly points out that the Russians have militarily and technologically gained an edge and the U.S. is decades behind now: "The missile gap is real and, in fact, it is not a gap but a technological abyss"! The U.S. is largely bluffing and does not have the capabilities it portends to. Which again, creates the danger of escalating toward thermonuclear war.

"Russia does not have the objective of destroying the U.S. Russia's actions are dictated by only one cause-the equivalent of pulling a gun on a drunk, rowdy, knife-wielding bully in the bar and get him to pay attention to the ramifications and personal dangers of his actions. It seems that this is the only way to deal with the U.S. today."

An absolute must-read and given the increasing tensions between Russia and the West, his book gains ever-greater importance.

This first of Martyanov's three books is the most infuriating, aggravating, sickening and depressing book that I’ve read in years. He dispassionately debunks the myths of American exceptionalism and that of the US military as the finest fighting force in history. As a retired USAF pilot, this has been a bitter pill for me to swallow. At no time during my four years in the Pentagon in USAF Plans & Ops, as well as USAF Requirements, plus Armed Forces Staff College & Air War College, plus 15 years in the cockpit in both crew and command positions, none of the significant information he shares was ever made known or disclosed to me. His experience, knowledge and footnotes are impressive. Likewise his writing style is straightforward and to the point; no hyperbole. This book should be MANDATORY reading for EVERY senator and congressman, particularly those on the House and Senate Armed Services Committees, as well as every US military officer, senior NCO, DoD, State Department, NSA and Executive Branch decision maker, especially the Offices of the President and Vice President. We are woefully unprepared to engage in a conventional conflict with either Russia or China and no one wins a nuclear war.

This is one of the most impactful books I have read in years. The author, straddling two very different cultures and military traditions, is able to bring alive the Russian "continental" experience of war and contrast it with the American "expeditionary" perspective on war. Although some readers may find the criticism of the American perspective to be harsh, it is one more of us in the West - particularly our political and cultural elites - should read and appreciate.

A very good read on what the MSM doesn't tell the American people about Russian people and its military. Hollywood has created this image of Russians that does not fit the reality and that hardships. This book thorouly explains how Russians have managed to survive countless war in their own country and against foreign forces. It gives a good idea how everyday Russians see and understand the world.

I didn't know Mr. Martyanov existed before bumping into him on "The Duran" Youtube channel. Then I started following Mr. Martyanov's channel and grew more and more interested in his books. This book is an eye-opener, as it does away with decades of propaganda: (a) on alleged wester military superiority as well as (b) on the alleged threat Russia poses to the western world. It is a very credible book, with deep roots in real facts: no taste of propaganda whatsoever.
