"Andrei Martyanov's book is an absolute 'must read' for any person wanting to understand the reality of modern warfare and super-power competition." THE SAKER

"Because navies can go quietly over the horizon in ways armies can't, naval development presents a country with unique opportunities for going wrong. When a continental power like the United States disregards its natural defense barriers and builds big battle fleets, it has turned from geopolitical realities towards a troublesome kind of make-believe. This kind of navy exists only to defeat other navies that are similarly inclined. That's justifiable only if other navies like that already exist."
No carrier-centric navies, other than the US Navy, exist, nor will they exist in the nearest future ...

This book, like his others, is full of footnotes and source material references. He does his homework! I have the Kindle editions, and his books are perfect for the medium; I scarcely made it through a page without highlighting and annotating something. If you're interested in comparative military affairs, you'll be glad to have this book. His social and cultural commentary isn't gratuitous; it can't be separated from what has happened to our military. HIGHLY recommended.
One of the biggest dangers to America is...America. It's delusions of grandeur have led the country into a downward spiral economically, culturally, and militarily: "the U.S. is following the steps of the Soviet Union, it is undergoing the phase of a non-violent Balkanization."
Martyanov clearly points out that the Russians have militarily and technologically gained an edge and the U.S. is decades behind now: "The missile gap is real and, in fact, it is not a gap but a technological abyss"! The U.S. is largely bluffing and does not have the capabilities it portends to. Which again, creates the danger of escalating toward thermonuclear war.
"Russia does not have the objective of destroying the U.S. Russia's actions are dictated by only one cause-the equivalent of pulling a gun on a drunk, rowdy, knife-wielding bully in the bar and get him to pay attention to the ramifications and personal dangers of his actions. It seems that this is the only way to deal with the U.S. today."
An absolute must-read and given the increasing tensions between Russia and the West, his book gains ever-greater importance.
