Emery Phillips is a young woman with trust issues, having grown up with a father that presented one disappointment after another. Now, one of his get rich quick ventures from the past threatens to leave them homeless, unless Emery can find the elusive Theodore Chambers, Jr, who has the power to save her childhood home by signing an extension to the bank loan. Armed with little more than sketchy information and a head full of determination, Emery heads across Canada to track TC, Junior down.
Ryan Miller has put off going through his late mother's effects for a year. Now, sitting in the middle of her things, remembering her cryptic comment of "things I should have told you" and a mysterious key have him wanting to pull out his hair. Fortunately, his best bud, Bobby is there for him. I absolutely loved this guy. He's the frustrating comic relief Ryan needs, and loyal to the bone. Some of the things he says just cracked me up.
Watching the relationship between Ryan and Emery, which begins with a steamy love scene, grow into something neither of them had been looking for was a delight. While Ryan helps Emery search for the person who can save her childhood home, he also slowly uncovers the mystery of his past, What he finds can either save the day...or blow the fragile bonds of trust he's built with Emery straight to hell.
Ryan just lost his mother, who was obviously a key person in his life. This young man is coping with selling his own family home and moving on with his life to go to medical school.
A chance mistake leads to one night of passionate love and it's the spark that fuels Emery and Ryan to truly get to know each other. I loved how these two young people grew together to trust each other, especially when both were suffering in their own way.
This is a great summer read. Full of angst, passion and love.
I found this to be a very enjoyable new adult romance. I often find in the world of new adult that the angst portion is very heavy - in this case, though there are some tragic events in the characters pasts, I did not find that it was overly emotional or dwelt upon these issues in a heavy handed manner which was a refreshing change. Emery is a take charge girl, used to making her own way and her own decisions. She was a feisty and fun character. Ryan was more laid back, partly from grief but also just his way of doing things. He came across as steadfast and loyal. The sexual attraction begins from their first meeting and leads to several hot and heavy make out sessions - well written and believable for the couple as they experiment and learn about each other. Though the mystery portion of the story is fairly easy to figure out, it made for an enjoyable plot and moved along at a fast pace.
As part of the Summer Lovin series, the setting of a small town in the Canadian rockies was well described and the secondary characters have their own stories with other authors (which will make one want to run and out and get the rest of the series!). Overall the tone of the story was relatively lighthearted with an interesting plot and some steamy sex as the lovers find their way to a happy for now ending. 4 stars!
