I was Fr. Austin's Rector for a decade at Saint Thomas Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, and after Susan died, encouraged Victor to write about her. This book is the result and is as good as or better than CS Lewis's A Grief Observed. Even though knowing the details of Susan's and Victor's story, I found Losing Susan to be a gripping page turner; and a tear jerker. What Victor writes about God is breath-taking - and true. He is in the tradition of Job, who as much as says to the Lord, "You're killing me, and I can't live without you."
Victor published in its entirety my sermon for Susan's requiem near the end of the story, even though it embarrassed him (by praising him) at its conclusion. Well, this book makes me realize how much more I could have said about this great priest - and excellent writer. Losing Susan could and should become a best seller, like Tim Keller's The Prodigal God.

Three hours and half a box of Kleenex later I finished reading Losing Susan and realized that it had not only blessed me, but changed me as well. Having cared for two members of my family who had a form of brain disease, Father Austin's story was not just a well written memoir, it was life played out again in bold color. And for the first time, the ice in my heart broke and I broke down in tears, over and over again. To grapple with pain and evil and death is difficult, but Father Austin does it with grace and honesty. I would highly recommend the book to anyone dealing with the trauma of loving someone with, or losing someone to, any form of disease.

I wish I was as eloquent a Rev. Austin in writing this review. This book is beautifully written and a true gem. I cried through the whole thing but I loved loved loved
his thoughts on Job and the God who gives and also takes away. This book is worthy of CS Lewis. It may be even better. I can't recommend it enough. It wasn't sappy or maudlin , it was real. Read it.
