I added Lost Angel Walkabout to my audiobooks for my armchair traveling friends in 2020. I just released of Embrace of the Wild a historical novel inspired by the life of the Victorian Age equestrian explorer Isabella Bird.

I was honored to be selected to be the "Isabella Bird Expert" in the BBC documentary tracing Isabella's hoofprints in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. The "Trailblazer" series is scheduled to air in December 2022.

Beautifully written, her stories make you feel you can reach out and touch the birds or smell the flowers at each location. I’ve lived in the area for over thirty years and I never knew these wonderful places existed. I can’t wait to try each and every one of them! At the end of each chapter is a link to the maps and places she discusses which is such a handy tool. Not only will you discover the best hikes, and yikes there are so many, but where to go afterwards to grab a bite, and dine well. As if that was not enough, she also gives you a taste of the history which many people including those who grew up here do not know.

It’s great the way different hiking areas are broken down into chapters. I can see keeping this as a reference, where one can read about a specific area and then, if one wants more in-depth information, using the links provided at the end of each chapter one can do a deeper dive. In addition, although the chapters are fairly short, the descriptive phrases used give the reader a feeling of actually having experienced each location on a more-than-just-factual-information basis. And since I live within easy striking distance, I’ll be reaching for the backpack more and more often.

Linda Ballou finds a wild beauty in the California coast that harks back to Native American times. They are "sharing the trail with you," she reminds us, pointing out that these people created many of our hikes thousands of years ago. Amusingly, she continues to be in the wild even when off trail. She dodges predators in the form of parking enforcement, and forages for the cutest affordable restaurants. Linda is a good hiking buddy, entertaining with lots of information about the places she brings us to. At Pt. Mugu State Park, she remembers that there once lived a vagrant who counted all the hikers to make sure that no one got lost. He was made a park ranger for his service, and the trail was renamed the Ray Miller Trail after him. At Cayucos Pier, her favorite stop on the "Whale Trail," Linda teaches us that whales live longer than any other mammals, and that gray whales have a heart-shaped spout. Her book reaches a crescendo in Sonoma County when she visits the Beauty Ranch of Jack London, the master of adventure writing and "a kindred spirit." She pays her respects at this dream property that he worked 10 hours a day on (after spending two hours writing), grateful that the ranch was spared from a recent fire. Scars of fires and mudslides appear frequently on her journeys, and are a reminder to us all to enjoy these vulnerable wonderful places now. "Hiking enlivens the senses and pulls us into the moment."
