So, this was a tough book for me. I have seen mental health issues, drug abuse, and alcoholism first hand. Ava's behavior is that of an enabler and it really ticked me off. She lied for Blaise, cleaned up after him, and kept his life going just as he liked it because she was 'helping him'. Their relationship is so codependent its dangerous for both of them. I was NOT rooting for them to get together because the first thing you learn in recovery is that people like this are bad for your sobriety. However, Ava did begin to stand up against him and she says something brilliant that totally changed the book for me (I will post the quote on my blog when I get the review up!). Its one of those quotes that every addict needs to hear because it is the reason they are still addicted!
After that, the book got better for me. Ava has her own issues to sort out and then there is craziness with Linus that really threw in an unexpected plot twist! I'm glad I stuck with the book because it really is a powerful look at codependency issues, mental health and the stigma attached to it, and the dangers of trying to be sober for someone else.
Avalon (Ava), has been best friends with Blaise since early childhood. She was with him when he started playing music, helped form his band and has spent years as his band manager. She has covered up his drinking and drug abuse has always stood behind him. Until one day enough is enough and maybe it is time to move on. Blaise has always had Avalon. Even as he slept around. She has always been there no matter what he did. He knew it and maybe he did take advantage. He never wanted to lose her, he loved her to much. When push comes to shove how do you take it from best friends to the love of your life.
I fell in love with the whole band. What an awesome group. I don't think a single one of them had a filter on the mouth. Especially Ava, if she thought it, she spoke it. She had problems with trusting men. Who can blame her. She loves Blaine as her best friend. She has never stopped to think it might be more. Blaise is your typical rock star. When it comes time for him to make changes in his life, he is off to a rough start but once he sets his mind to it. There is no stopping him. Two broken people trying to find their way through life. Lots of craziness, lots of humor and some angst. You are drawn into the world of Finding Nolan. A place you might not want to leave.
Ms. Thomas sure created some screwed up people with lots of depth to each of them. The love that Ava & Blaise had for each other was a "melt your heart" type. It was just too bad that the characters didn't know this at the same time. At first you see how Ava's love runs so deep (even though she didn't admit it at that time) and at the end it is Blaise who shows the love for Ava which he had felt since they were kids.
One other thing that Ms. Thomas did was make me look like a crazy person. There were times that the writing was so well done that I was actually laughing out loud and glad that I was home alone so no one heard it. So even though this was an intense storyline the author knew how to lighten it up with a few really funny things that were said.
I am only hoping that Ms. Thomas continues a series with this band. I would love to read what she could come up with dealing with each of the very interesting band mates.
Blaise fighting his demons and the troubles that come along with that seemed so realistic that I worried the hurts he had could ever be healed. There were parts that were so tough, mixed with the sweetness and romance. I really wanted him to figure this all out and go after what really mattered to him.
K.S. Thomas' skills improve with each novel she writes. I loved this story and look forward to her next book!
The characters in this book are very different from any other book that I have read. They are members of a band -- and that in itself can tell you a lot right there. Each band member has their own issues to deal with and they are issues that everyday people also have to deal with. Mix a little bit of love in there and you have an awesome story by K S Thomas. I don't write spoilers - but, I will say this -- once I started reading this book, I found it hard to stop and put it down. YES -- it is that type of amazingly good!!!
Oh -- and keep the tissues handy because you will definitely need them by the end!!
I was given a copy of this book for an honest review.
