The lost and found aspect is clear in this story. It starts off heartbreaking and tragic, full of loss and heartache, but there is still that feeling of hope. Catalina is lost as a baby and really starts to blossom when love finally finds her.
Catalina, who is adopted by a poor family in Spain, suffers hardship from her father. Frequently beaten and bruised, fearing for her safety, Catalina's only close friend is her Grandmother Abuela. Her plans about becoming a nun to escape her father are put on hold when she has a run in with an injured soldier called Rupert.
She secretly nurses him back to health and they eventually fall in love with each other. Alas, they are to be separated by his sense of duty and his promise to come back to her. It seemed like Catalina had been lost again.
It's a theme that was constant throughout the story, but I will not delve into the being found part because it would be giving too much away. It was a very enjoyable journey that spans a few years, with ups and downs and everything in between. With a few flying bullets and some military action, this was a satisfying read. The author truly did a lot of research and it shows in the writing.
A happily ever after is granted and all is well in Catalina's world.
