Readers want to cheer for the underdog who faces difficult odds. They want to see the "hero" survive the journey. You rush that process,or you completely miss pulling empathy from the reader, then you will not see any emotional investment in the story. People won't care and they won't want to finish the book or continue reading the series.
I did not like this main character. Unfortunately, for the public's own safety, I would want Molly the Mindflayer to be taken out. She sounds evil. She acts evil. She recognizes no authority but her own and she can't be a team player. Her emotional control is dicey to say the least and her powers seem to have no end. The few good things she has done is undercut by all the terrible things she does with her creepy powers. Molly gets one partner killed and puts another in a situation where his mind gets taken over and he does terrible things. She suffers loss in the end but her reaction to the loss of a relationship that is so new is way over the top. She kills everyone. Do you love her yet? I didn't and I won't be purchasing anymore books by this author.
The worldbuilding was great-- in fact, I loved the way the writer pulled all her pieces together into a wonderful plot with excellent characters-- love 'em or hate 'em, the protagonists were engaging and well-developed. The writing was descriptive and created imagery in almost every scene, but unfortunately the prose was a tad loose. A really good developmental editor could have cleaned up some of the redundancies and extra words. That said, I will read more of the series-- no matter my wish the author had an editor to do her justice, the plotting and worldbuilding alone will encourage me to buy the next book in this great series.
