Three friends, each on the brink of a quarter-life crisis, make a pact to quit their high pressure New York City media jobs and leave behind their friends, boyfriends, and everything familiar to embark on a year-long backpacking adventure around the world in The Lost Girls.

With their thirtieth birthdays looming, Jen, Holly, and Amanda are feeling the pressure to hit certain milestones—score the big promotion, find a soul mate, have 2.2 kids. Instead, they make a pact to quit their jobs and set out on a journey in search of inspiration and direction.

Traveling 60,000 miles across four continents, Jen, Holly, and Amanda push themselves far outside their comfort zones to embrace every adventure. Ultimately, theirs is a story of true friendship—a bond forged by sharing beds and backpacks, enduring exotic illnesses, trekking across mountains, and standing by one another through heartaches, whirlwind romances, and everything in the world in between.

    Muzungu: One who travels around
Article first published as Mzungu: One who travels around on Technorati.

I really enjoyed this book. I wrote this article which was first on Technorati:

In the book, The Lost Girls: Three Friends. Four Continents. One Unconventional Detour Around the World, the three "lost girls" are in Africa and learn the word, Muzungu. "I learned that [muzungu] originally meant `one who travels around,' referring to the European traders who came in the 1800s." As a "muzungu" or one who travels around, I really enjoyed this travelogue with the three 20-somethings on a mission to see the world, have adventures, and as with all long journeys, to find themselves.

Their three voices share the storytelling and their personal sagas. Each brings personal experience and dreams to be fulfilled. Learning to scuba dive, teach yoga or help young African girls through creating a play, is mingled with the dramatic tuk tuk rides, muddy hikes and their evolving lives.

During our summer Sri Lankan adventures and in my 103rd country of travel, while reading this book, I had an incredible new experience! At the Flower Inn outside Sigiria Ancient Rock Fortress I went to the toilet and A FROG jumped out of the toilet. I was surprised to see a frog and it smelled like crap which makes sense since it must have climbed through the septic system. Later that night as I checked the toilet first, there were two smaller frogs and tons of ants. Not a huge shock, as we generally stay in hostels that rank on our scale of minus one star.We did have a typical rice and curry dinner which was a feast of 14 dishes of curry including pumpkin, Jackfruit, carrot, potato, vegetable soup and an omelette at the family owned Flower Inn which was started in 1972.

Sri Lanka is definitely a wild adventure and was a great place to read, especially when we were not allowed out at night due to wild elephants that wander in Sigiriya. In the book, The Lost Girls, they learn to be better friends to each other and themselves as they evolve while discovering the beauty of the Taj Mahal, the forgiveness of a van company after you total their car, and the importance of true friends who support you through all of life's struggles.

My favorite quote is from the beginning of the book, "The world is round, the place which may seem like the end may also be the beginning. Ivy Baker Priest." The more I travel, the more I learn about myself and that the end is only the beginning. Like the actual Lost Girls in the story, I have "prioritized adventure and discovery over stability and structure" and that has made all the difference on the road less traveled.

We are leaving December 18 for Colombia to begin our next adventure, and I look forward to more dramas like frogs in the toilet or wild elephants at night. Who knows what these muzungus will see next!

Our book club very much enjoyed reading this travel memoir. I was surprised and pleased by the enthusiastic reactions and comments of our late-50s to early-60s members. While the book is geared toward twenty-thirty year olds, it should by no means be overlooked by those of us who are older. I found it interesting that these girls didn't take the trip with any "agenda" in mind - changing the world, writing the great American novel, etc. They simply love to travel and are willing to make it a priority in their lives. They are risk-takers who are open to meeting all kinds of people, and willing to work hard to make things happen for themselves and for others. I found it a fun book to read and hard to put down at times. I certainly hope readers of all ages, but especially young women, will find courage from the adventures in this book to begin to follow their own dreams.

I am partial to travel memoirs because I live through their experiences vicariously. So, then, this was an easy read in that sense. However, I guess I wanted a more introspective and thoughtful look into their travels. I felt that I got this particularly from one of the three. The other two seemed to be more like, "Hear about our crazy tales! Isn't that cool?" They all had their reflective moments, but perhaps I was expecting too much.

I was still left inspired that they were all such career driven individuals but decided to leave all of that for an unforgettable experience. For that, I would recommend this book especially if you are in a funk in your career or are afraid of taking that plunge. As for me, I was left wanting more from the travel experience itself.

For anyone who has ever felt there was more to life than a cubicle... For anyone who has ever wanted to just go... This is the book for you! Jen, Holly and Amanda write with a sense of fun, sassiness and adventure that is truly infectious! From page one I was hooked and by the end of the book I was counting change in my piggy bank to see how long I would need to save to go on my own RTW trip. I really loved the way the Lost Girls integrated their reasons for wanting to be "lost" as well as reactions by family and friends and most importantly, the emotional highs and lows of travel. I appreciated that they kept their story real and didn't just write about the good times but about the challenges and struggles as well. Overall I give this a huge thumbs up and will be recommending to all my friends!

I was hooked on the first page. Perhaps the reason for this is that the authors and I have been to similar locations and have shared similar experiences! Even after 40 plus years, the sound of the Urubumba River, the taste of Inca Cola, the smell of Aguardente are as fresh as if they were yesterday. I was on the adventure all over again sharing the possibilities vicariously this time through each author's eyes. For those who love the journey as much as the destination, this is the book. The strong bonds that are forged through shared life changing experiences are so evident in this book. Upcoming destinations on the 3 month journey I am on, are; Siem Reap, Luang Prabang and then Hanoi. I will definitely view these places with a different perspective. Thanks for sharing your journey ladies!

I love the fact that these authors were normal women with normal jobs and not a lot of savings (if any) who decided to quit everything and take a chance on traveling the world for a year. No apartments or jobs to come home too, which was scary. Not many would do the same. I wish they had spent more time in the details of what they were observing than talking about each other. I also wish I knew how much of an impact the people they met along the way had on them in the long-term. Sometimes I was taken out of the story a bit when they were talking about what each other was thinking instead of just describing what was happening. But overall, a very inspiring read.

Despite a writing style that is quite simplistic and casual, it was such a good read. I was right there with them, traveling in all those countries. I especially enjoyed the chapters described by Holly, as I felt they were more 'real' and a deeper personal journey than the partying/boys/cat fight approach of the other two.
It is the perfect beach read or travel companion, or a sunny escape in the middle of the winter!

I picked up this book while on my own adventure in Peru. At first I was disappointed that the girls didn't write more about each place they visited but as the story plaid out I had a good understanding about who they were, where they were coming from and I can't help but wonder what happened after they returned home. I personally loved this book and was sad when Both the book and my trip came to an end. They've helped to add a few places tO my bucket list.
