This story is very interesting with an excellent plot and a bit of detective work all coated with romance. A pleasure to read it. Maria Rennard

This book was a disappointment and not what I have come to expect from a Regency Romance. The heroine is completely dependent on a man who intimidates, isolates and assaults her. When she, rightfully, expresses her anger at these actions, her concerns are belittled. This smacks of abuse and the happy ending seems contrived because of it.

I have enjoyed other Mack books, but this one was not good. The premise was interesting and heroine was likeable if somewhat dull, but the male characters were pretty awful. Only one was worth reading, and even he got tricked by another man. Curiously, one of the secondary female characters was unexpectedly nuanced. Still, no recommendation for this one.

I have Kindle Unlimited. I read many books. I return more unread than I read. Finally an author that held my attention. I like the Regency era but not Regency romances. I am referring to books where the story is entirely about the H meeting the h, dislike eventually becoming undying love, all 20-30 chapters a story all about feelings. Most of these romances are by top authors with five star reviews. That is why I no longer pick books by their reviews. I download these and read 3-4 chapters before sending them back. I don't review them because it would be unfair to the authors. I haven't actually read them and it's not their fault they aren't my type. I want to read an interesting story that happens to have a H and h falling in love during the story with the story being the main draw. This author is new to me. Her story held my attention while the characters, which personalities could be better written, fell in love. I will download more books by her as long as the books showcase stories first, romances second.

CW: abuse
I couldn’t quite finish this book, because it was such unpleasant reading. it did the thing where it passed off an abusive relationship as love. The male protagonist was emotionally abusive. Nothing likeable about him. He entraps her, also assaults her (forced kissing) a couple of times and then gaslights her, but somehow HEA, I guess. I don’t review books usually but this one warranted it. It’s just bad.

I have to agree with previous reviewers' comments. The male protagonist treated the female protagonist with disrespect, dishonesty and at times, abuse. His love for her, if you could call it that, was self-centered and childish. Love does not consist only of sexual desire. Rather, it is a desire for the good of the one being loved.
I rarely fail to complete a book, but I had to stop reading this one. It disappointed me greatly.

I am very fond of Georgette Heyer's books and think Dorothy Mack is an excellent author to read after Mrs. Heyer. Her books have good plots, interesting characters, and are well-written. There are no steamy sex scenes to titillate and disguise problems.

I liked Brianna, and adored Jamie. But Christopher? I was never convinced why she eventually felt she loved him. He was abusive - limiting her contacts, lying to her, outright abusive. As best as I can tell she just reacted to arousing touch for the first time she ever experienced it and thought that was love. And if he loved her, he should have treated her better. Frustrated with this book.

I enjoyed the story line and the excitement of the chase to find solutions to all the problems. This author never seems to fail to satisfy my respect for the characters who seem to always be chosen with care and consideration , even when they are to be hated in the roll they fulfilled . Thanks you I chose well.

A real glimpse into the Georgian world. From life in a small village as a kindly Rector’s daughter to becoming part of a magnificent estate and its interesting and dramatic goings on. Dorothy Mack is a brilliant writer who brings history to life.

Not a pleasant read

I didn't enjoy this book at all. In fact, it almost made me swear off "historical romances" entirely. The heroine - if she can be called that - is irritating, priggish, and without any redeeming features. Her thinking is baroque, contradictory, and repellent. Her "shyness" is irritating and not in the least endearing. The hero is far more attractive, but one has to wonder about him being besotted with such a true nonentity.
The plot appears to be a take-off of Georgette Heyer's "The Quiet Gentleman" and even here, when the hero is in extremis, the stupid girl's thinking is nothing but irritating.
So no, I can't recommend this one. It's irritating from start to finish.
