If coming upon a suicide that might be tied to 35 year old deaths wasn’t bad enough, Zoe soon gets a visit from her stepfather Tom, a charming man, and her mother Kimberly, whom she can barely tolerate. She must house them for a few days. Of course, Kimberly is not a fan of life in a small town. It’s why she moved out. To make matters worse, Zoe’s “sort of” boyfriend Pete Adams of the Vance Township police, who she can usually count on to ease her burdens, is suddenly saddled with caring for his own aged father who suffers from Alzheimer’s.
Things only get worse from there as the investigation quickly determines it was murder, not suicide; there is more violence; and all this may be tied into the death of Zoe’s father in a car accident many years ago.
The investigation progresses, as does the relationship between Zoe and Pete, and her mother and stepfather, and Pete’s father. It’s the interesting mash of characters in a small western Pennsylvania town that drives the story. These are real people with real problems and conflicts. The reader is happy to spend time in Vance Township and learn more about the place and the people. The plot twists and turns to its very exciting, well written, and satisfying conclusion.
This is the second Zoe Chambers mystery. Often the second in a series is sometimes a letdown, but not this time. I’m anxiously awaiting the next one.
Warning, there is some strong language in this book, not an over amount but there is some.
