Fun and nostalgic new tunes from Carpenter's keyboards.

As a huge John Carpenter fan, I have gotten used to the idea that 2010’s The Ward may be the last film we see from the semi-retired master director…which meant an even less likely chance of another classic Carpenter film score…or so we thought. Lost Themes is a fun collection of new tracks composed by Carpenter who hasn’t written any published music since the Ghosts Of Mars score back in 2001. It is a collection of nine original tracks and six remixes, of some of those tracks and if you’re a fan of Carpenter’s film scores, you’ll probably have a good time with these. They vary in style and tone and while few really come close to his most classic film music, they certainly do evoke his work and offer a bit of 80s electronic nostalgia, too. The closest the disc comes to his best film scores are the opening track “Vortex” and two later tracks “Abyss” and “Wraith”, those two reminding me of some of his later soundtracks. I don’t think Carpenter was out to reclaim lost glory, though, as much as, just have a creative good time and that comes through on most of the tunes. It’s more music from a man whose film scores are as beloved as many of his films and that’s good enough for me. There is variety and versatility here and while the disc didn’t blow me away like some of his soundtracks, I enjoyed hearing new Carpenter compositions in the master’s style and was quite pleased with it overall. Not a classic disc but, an entertaining one and certainly a heartfelt and nostalgic one. Let’s hope composing gives him the directing bug once more and maybe we will get yet another Carpenter classic to add to his canon. A must for fans of Carpenter’s scores and also of interest to fans of 80s electronic film music like Tangerine Dream and Vangelis.

As I sit here listening to John Carpenter's debut non-soundtrack album Lost Themes on this dark, dreary and snowy New England day, I look out of my window and feel a chill as Carpenter's trademark synths pour out of my speakers. It's as if he is playing along to the cold, isolated vantage point to which I sit.

Alas, Carpenter isn't playing along to any particular image this time around, as he has finally earned the freeing experience of simply playing music for his own vision and entertainment. Recorded with the help of Carpenter's son and grandson, Lost Themes has that old familiar sound that we've all come to love and expect from the master of horror, but it's filled to the brim with an abundance of heart and soul. Not that his previous soundtracks lacked that in any way, but this particular journey can be enjoyed along with him, as listeners can easily lose themselves in the array of hypnotic synths, strings and bass lines.

Opening with "Vortex", you immediately feel as though Christine is chasing you down, yet the track takes aim at your senses and does well to carry you away into a completely different world away from the classic 1983 film. "Obsidian" is very much reminiscent of In The Mouth of Madness, "Fallen" much like The Fog and "Mystery" maintains a Prince of Darkness tone. But I'm going to dispense with the comparisons of Carpenter's classic soundtracks. That would hardly be fair to a man of his talent and stature. If you've been a fan of the director's films and soundtracks, you'll most certainly enjoy this dynamic ominous batch of new material. Whatever emotion it evokes, it will be a soundtrack to your own story; no one else's on the big screen.

The material is 5 stars, these songs are epic Carpenter. But the vinyl is so disappointing to listen to compared to the digital files. Very muddy mix, low volume, no definition in the sounds. When compared to the digital files it's night and day. The digital is so crisp, the sounds pop out, throb, pulse like you would want from an epic Carpenter score. Don't waste 20 bucks on the vinyl, it also has moments of popping and surface noise. So tired of this with the new pressed vinyl, it's like all the hard work is gone, sounds like a bootleg pressing. I've been telling myself not to keep purchasing new releases on vinyl, they are over priced and sound like crap compared to the CD version of the same release. But habits are hard to kick. This might be the nail in the coffin, how Sacred Bones can get the test pressing and ok it to go out into the world is beyond me, shame shame.

I may be a bit biased here, being that I'm a huge fan of Carpenter, but I have listened to this album non-stop since it came out. Vortex and Obsidian are EXCELLENT tracks to kick this album off with, and NIGHT is such a perfect way to end it. Initially, I felt a little indifferent to the remixes on the album, however, I'd be lying if I said they didn't grow on me, especially the Abyss remix.

Let's be honest, here; John Carpenter is no John Williams or Hans Zimmer when it comes to scoring, however, the most important thing is he GETS it. John has a certain "sound" to his music, and I've never been able to pinpoint what it is, but whenever you hear a Carpenter song, you know it's him, and that's what this album has. Although he uses more up-to-date gear on this album, it still has that Carpenter vibe, and it's quite interesting to hear.

Happy to hear some GOOD electronic music among all the noisy crap being put out today. Can't wait for his next album.

John Carpenter is a legend. I've been a fan of his music since I first saw The Thing when I was about 15. I saw him play on tour, at the Colston Hall in Bristol at the end of 2016. What an amazing show... He performed every theme tune you wanted him to, except Ghosts of Mars. I guess Anthrax weren't available. This CD is good. The music is typical Carpenter. For me, it lacks some of the atmosphere his famous theme tunes deliver, but that's probably because when listening to them I picture the films and get immersed in the the music because of that. You can't do that with this CD. Anyway, it's good and if you're a fan, you'll enjoy it. But once you've listened to it a couple of times, you'll probably go back to listening to Escape From New York and Halloween.
