Lost In Time focuses on a big search for two things: the Gate of Promise and Kingsley Martin. We see Jack and Schuyler on the search for the Gate of Promise, while Mimi and Oliver are in the Underworld looking for Kingsley Martin. We see new friends come, we see new friends die, we see the state of the vampire world, and we get a glimpse of what the future may hold.
While I did finish this book pretty quickly, considering I teach full time, I can't say I truly enjoyed it. I can't say it even compares to other Blue Blood novels; it's pacing was a little off and the plotting seemed stretched thin. Overall, though, it was a good enough read! I will read the final book in this series, Gates of Paradise.
However, I was disappointed by Lost in Time. As others have mentioned, it felt like we were circling, much like Mimi and Oliver in Limbo. Lost in Time presented us with new mysteries, without resolving the old, and very few answers.
I could forgive that since it is the penultimate book in the series. What I can't forgive, and is literally driving me nuts as a reader in this already very complicated web of characters and story-threads, is the way that de la Cruz continually pushes her spin-off series' into the limelight of a Blue Bloods book.
I sat down and read the series in successive order this week and found that even I was a bit lost when Lost in Time began, but its because de la Cruz intentionally lef the Blue Bloods readers out of the development of the Mimi-Oliver relationship. The introduction of Oliver as Mimi's conduit threw me, and Mimi and Oliver's storyline is fully driven by events that have occurred outside of the Blue Bloods series, presumably in the spin-off witch series.
I wouldn't mind a little crossover cameo here and there, but the fact that one of Lost in Time's major plot points developed from events unseen in this series, really led me to question de la Cruz's integrity as a storyteller. I don't like feeling pushed into reading the spin-off series to find out what is going on in a series that I've been with for years, and its cast a negative shadow over the entire series for me.
This series has so much mystery surrounding it, everywhere you turn around there is a piece of the gigantic puzzle that just leads to more questions than answers. However we do get somethings answered like: What happened to Kingsley in Hell, More info on the Gates, and we get a glimpse into Allegra's past with Stephen "Bendix" Chase and what happened in the end between her and Charles.
**Maybe spoiler....a theory.**
I have a serious theory, if you read the last third of Lost in Time and you look at evidence from the previous books, you will come to one conclusion....Charles is Schuyler's actual father. I had an inkling after reading the third book Revelations, but now there is very little doubt in my mind that I am right.
**End of maybe spoiler/theory**
What I liked:
I really liked that Melissa talks about the culture in Egypt and she references many different locations around Egypt. I also really love the fact that I just can't see the ending to this series. I have no idea how they are going to defeat Lucifer and his minions, how is Schuyler(Skye) going to help, who else is going to die and how they are going to come back from being almost totally devastated. I am going to say it....I ship Schuyler and Jack. In the beginning I was totally team Oliver (Ollie) and I was leery of Jack, then after a couple of books I was torn and now I can see why Skye and Jack a made for each other. She is the light and he is the darkness, "without darkness there could be no light" (I think it was a Sailor Moon quote, yes I am totally serious).
What I didn't like:
I really can't see Oliver and Mimi being friends, it just seems weird and I hate the fact that even though Oliver and Skye still consider themselves friends it's a different kind of friendship. They aren't as close as they use to be, you can feel the distance between them and Mimi is apart of that.
I love the Blue Blood series and Lost in Time wasn't disappointing. I can't wait to see what happens in the end. The final book is Gates of Paradise and I will be reading it, soon rather than later.
