This documentary is an excellent, updated companion piece to May's book. In a way, it's better, because you are able to watch old interviews of May when her book came out; at the time we didn't have a VCR to record these interviews. There's also old interviews of John and Yoko as well as current interviews by Julian Lennon and others who knew May, John and Yoko.
In a 1980s interview, May was accused by one male interviewer of making money off of John Lennon. May had a ready answer: she wanted to tell her story, since others had given false or misleading accounts. In addition, after John returned to Yoko, Yoko fired May and she found herself blackballed by the music industry. So she had to start all over again with her career as a personal assistant/associate producer.
May discusses her childhood, her savvy mother who started a dry cleaning business, and growing up with an alcoholic, abusive father who didn't value girls. In fact, he adopted a boy and ignored May, which made her feel unwanted and unloved. But her mother was an excellent role model, and May realized she needed to leave home and become independent like her mother. At age 19, she talked her way into job at Apple, and that's where she met John and Yoko.
She elaborates more about her relationship with Julian Lennon and John's friends. She is also more honest and forthright about Yoko's demands when May was the Lennons' personal assistant; in her book, May had softened what Yoko asked of her, especially about starting an affair with John.
May's affair with John was devised and orchestrated by Yoko. She and John were having marital problems, so Yoko wanted John with a mistress that she could control. May did not want any part of this love triangle, but was ordered by Yoko to proceed. What started off as an affair manipulated by Yoko turned into genuine love. May and John thought they would have a future together, and at one point, were looking at a home to buy. Their relationship had gone further than Yoko expected, so she reeled John back in with primal scream therapy and other re-programming techniques that changed John's personality. May knew she had lost John, but the two would see each other off and on until John's horrific death.
You'll find yourself watching this documentary over and over again, because there's so much information. What was described in the media as "John's Lost Weekend" was actually a deep love affair between May and John. It wasn't easy for May to deal with John during this time; he was drinking and drugging quite heavily with his friends, who enabled him. Recording sessions would turn into drunken parties and sometimes got violent.
The documentary featured a lot of letters from John to May, as well as many photos of their time together. May took several beautiful shots of John. If anyone doubted May's relationship with John, she had plenty of proof. What was clever is the documentary would often switch to cartoon form, using cartoons that looked like John's drawings. He usually added drawings in his letters to May.
This was a well-made documentary. It moves at a fast pace and has a lot of interesting information about John and Yoko's relationship not only with May, but with John's former wife Cynthia, Julian, the other Beatles, and John's friends. There's a lot of new information that wasn't in May's 1983 book. However, if you can find a copy of May's book, you'll find it just as interesting as this documentary.
It was a sweet story and it’s very clear that May loved John so dearly, and he loved her. What a sweet love story. The other thing I like about May is she didn’t try and intrude on the Beatles like Yoko did.
