Vinnie Hansen fled the South Dakota prairie for the California coast the day after high school graduation.

A reading addict since childhood, Vinnie is now the author of the Carol Sabala mysteries. The seventh installment in the series, Black Beans & Venom, was a finalist for the Claymore Award. She’s also written two stand-alone novels titled Lostart Street and One Gun. Her many published short stories include "Miscalculation" in Santa Cruz Noir, "Novel Solution" in Fish or Cut Bait, "Room and Board" in Fishy Business, and "The Last Word" in Fault Lines, Stories by Northern California Crime Writers. Her flash fiction, "Bad Connection," won the 2015 Golden Donut Award from the Writers' Police Academy.

A feel good story about characters with more nuance and flavor, living closer to the edge than the vanilla casts and fairytale settings of Maeve Binchy or the Hallmark Channel. It reminded me of Billie Letts’ WHERE THE HEART IS as it gently reveals the many layers of the varied inhabitants of Lostart Street. Some are better than others. None are perfect. Most have something to offer others and a wound they need to heal. To be always gentle but never sentimental is a deft feat. Vinnie Hansen nails it.

At the beginning, this story weaves from character to character, almost drunkenly enjoying the diversity tossed in by a generous author. A spinster - check. A lothario - check. A mysterious woman, a shyster slumlord, a child or two or more. Add in a mystery, and a murder, and the drama is quite high.
And a touch of gentle - a young mother and her child, an old woman and her cat, and in the end, something like healing, both of people and a neighborhood.

I was somewhat hesitant to start this book. I’m so glad I finally read it. The characters were well drawn, so much so that I’m missing them now that I’m finished. I like the school scenes. The kids and teachers seemed very real. As a former teacher and counselor, I like the way she regarded the kids as real people with increasing awareness that they had lives beyond school.

Often, it is difficult to find an author who has made a splash in a particular genre, to make an equal splash in another. This is true of Vinnie Hansen in Lostart Street. This book was a little different to get a hold of because the author took advantage of several points of view to express the growth of the main character and the reasons why. Reasons why are the story itself and I will not allow you to be denied the opportunity to read the questions and the answers. The setting is of particular importance because it evokes a particular culture that is also very important to the story line...not just a random place in time. This is a story worth reading.

After experiencing a failed life as a would be
writer and failed relationship in San Francisco,
Cecile leaves the city for a teaching job in a small
town on the coast. In a hurry to find a place to live
before the first day at school, Cecile rents a unit
on Lostart Street. Her unit is in a complex once
meant for the elderly and handicapped. It is run
down but still livable.
You will meet all her neighbors, the landlord, the
owner, her various classroom students plus the
other teachers in her new school. You will watch
the groups grow as Cecile grows both professionally
and personally.
The book is intriguing with characters that are
believable, realistic, vivid, quirky and colorful.
They are involved in a complicated plot that keeps
you reading from start to finish. The characters are
well created for a story with dynamic relationships.
The author has a knack for weaving words together
in expressing emotions of the characters. The characters
were engaging and well defined. The author gets inside
the heads of the characters presenting them to the readers
The story has robberies, danger, intrigue, murder, cats,
mice and mystery with a touch of romance and humor.
I felt I was involved in what was happening throughout the
whole story. You’ll enjoy reading this book.

English teaching anyone?

This was a good story. Not my usual cozy mystery but it was good. The characters are well developed and the storyline is interesting. You get lost in the every day drama as if you are really there. I recommend this book to anyone who loves to read. This is a new author for me and I was happy to receive a free copy to read and review. I am always happy to leave an honest review, especially when the story touches the heart.

A Literary Soap Opera With a Bit of Mystery

This “novel of mystery, murder, and moonbeams,” as it’s billed, took me back to the early 1980s Santa Cruz—where I lived during that time. And Vinnie Hansen gets it right, with her cast of eccentric characters who all live in the same apartment complex. A sort of literary soap opera with a bit of mystery thrown in for extra fun, Lostart Street is an entertaining read and will make anyone who lived through that period of disco, punk, and leisure suits smile. (And it has a map, too!)

Love, love, love this quick and quirky book! What an assembly of well defined believable characters interacting in a tight setting! Human nature simultaneously played out at its worst and at its best. All your emotions will be touched from warmth to anguish as the pages fly by to see what gems could possibly be on the next page! A street level look at the human condition that will keep you thinking long after the book is finished.
