This writer can write and this is a satisfying end to the trilogy. Lots of things to love, including the value of friendship, forgiveness and life itself. However, it missed out on a five star on a couple of points.

The first is that I guessed the big twist at the end very early and waiting for the written reveal was a tad tedious. Second, Diego's history as a criminal participating in some skeevy stuff (like brothels) gets pretty much a freely pass. I got the feeling (and this may be me and not the writers intent) that the MC's reveal as not completely guilt free and subsequent sense of moving on was supposed to free him of qualms about Diego's past. And that just doesn't fly with me. I didn't see Diego as actually bearing a whole lot of remorse, much less any atonement.

Is well written and if you're of the "we're in love and we forgive each other and that's all that matters" aficionados then this is pretty perfect. Worthwhile read, I'm just not a fan of the specific mafia/cartel romance genre.

The story is very powerful, and not simply because I wanted to hear more about Alec. It’s the third in a series about the lovers, Diego and Alec. The first two books (The Foundling and None Can Hold the Dark) are from Diego’s point of view. He’s not 100% a good guy, so he’s got an different perspective on things, which makes for fun reading. So I was thrilled when the author came out with The Lostling, especially when I found out it was to be from Alec’s point of view!

I thought it would be more about the lovers falling deeper in love, because I like stories like that. And it is, because the characters become closer as they find out the truth about what happened to Alec to leave him stranded and alone, floating on the ocean. However, it was a bit darker than I expected, but brilliantly done and very enjoyable.

Reading this impacted me deeply because the I have grown to care about these characters so much, it was almost impossible not to get worked up by the end of the book because of who Alec is and because of how hard he tries. I cried at the end of the story, and that doesn’t usually happen to me.

Wendy has the most poetic writing; and the book reflect that with the many beautiful ways she juxtaposes elements in the language. For example, in this story, texture becomes a smell, or a sound has weight and fills the soul. Or how early on, the the fog represents a barrier to memory, and then, later, the fog becomes memory.  She also puts her writers through hell, with a skill I admire very much.

This was a terrific read, and I sincerely hope that this is not the end of stories about Diego and Alec.
