Editorial Reviews

Review

With its beautifully conceived framework and its compelling, highly readable essays, Louisiana Women restores important but neglected women to the historical narrative, from the colonial period to the present. Yet it is more than just an exercise in recovery. Each of the essays uses the lives of particular women to highlight broader themes in the state's history―and the history of the South as well. Louisiana Women is a shining example of how women's history transforms our understanding of history more generally.

(Laura F. Edwards author of Scarlett Doesn't Live Here Anymore: Southern Women in the Civil War Era)

Some are well known, some are previously overlooked, but all the women in this collection shaped Louisiana’s history in important ways. Scholars, students, and general readers will be captivated by the many faces of Louisiana women.

(Elna C. Green author of Southern Strategies: Southern Women and the Woman Suffrage Question)

These historians bring readers the lives of an amazing variety of women. . . .This immensely readable collection of essays shows the great scope of Louisiana women's achievements.

(New Orleans Times-Picayune)

The kinds of essays that will tell you what it is really like to grow up and/or come-of-age in Louisiana. These strong, influential women know that the geography of the soul is immeasurable Each one of them will take you into the uncharted territories that turned them into artists, conservationists, political forces, painters, social forces that changed the worlds they lived and created in.

This review is intended as a warning not to purchase the Kindle version of this book. The Kindle link appears to transfer immediately to the page volume 2 in this series. Volume 2 of course has entirely different content than volume 1. I wrote to Amazon about this issue and even put some time into trying telephone contact. Amazon's response was that I didn't understand that volume 2 is somehow the Kindle version of volume 1. Otherwise, would I please wait on endless telephone hold for technical support. At this point I am out $14 for volume 2, which is interesting in its own right, but I haven't been able to acquire the item I really want.
