Kate was so strong. Right from the start I could feel her strength, but also her resolve. As the story goes on her strength shines so bright. I loved her character.
Damian was a jerk but it was understandable. He was dealing with his own past but at the same time showing Katie a love so beautiful that it made my heart happy. seeing him from the start of the book to the end, I laughed and cried for him.
I loved the plot. Yes it was a heart breaking but it was so beautiful. I want to say I hoped for a different ending then we know what's going to happened, but I didn't. The author did an amazing job with writing such a tough subject, and I can say that I can't wait to read the next book.
Overall, I loved it. This author broke me in such a good way. I plan to read the book about Damian but I think it will be a while before I can stomach it. The flow was amazing. It didn't go to fast or to slow, and I didn't feel like I was left wanting anything. 5 stars #2OCCJD
Kate is battling her third fight with leukemia. During her chemo she meets her oncologist's bad boy son, Damian. Kate is intrigued from the get go and they strike up an unlikely friendship/relationship. Kate has a positive attitude on life regardless of her situation and her hope and her ability to find the light in the dark is part of the draw for Damian as he's battling demons of his own with the aid of alcohol. Damian was an interesting character because Kate truly does seem to bring out the best in him. His journey does have speed bumps along the way but by the end I was truly hoping he had turned a corner.
This was a sweet tale of first love. Kate was sort of naive and seemed young for a 17 yr old but that was understandable seeing she'd been in and out of hospitals since her diagnosis at age 11. No siblings, no real friends, she longs to feel "normal" and not like an outsider for once. Damian manages to fulfill all of that for Kate and it's heartwarming to see how much these normal teen activities, that most take for granted, mean to Kate.
I knew the first book was going to be sad, anyone who reads the back of Kate's book knows that and I thought I was ready for it....I was so not ready. NOT EVEN CLOSE. Then I decided I needed to read the second book right away because I needed some sort of resolution, some kind of happy ending to make all of the crying worth it. I expected it to be more uplifting (and eventually it was) but in all honesty...I cried more consistently and much harder during this book. My throat hurts from crying, my eyes will probably be puffy for the next two days and I think I went through an entire roll of toilet paper blowing my nose. And, in case I haven't mentioned it, I adored every single second of it.
These books are gorgeously written, incredible intelligent, wonderfully emotional and perfectly crafted. The intricacies of the story are amazing, every word has a purpose, every action has a result, every loose end has a beautiful resolution. God I can't remember ever loving a story this much. I can't remember ever loving and understand and CARING about characters this much. And not just one character, not just the main characters....every single character!!! The author's ability to put us inside the character's head and let us understand exactly where they are coming from is amazing and it's done without endless monologues which is wonderful.
Just a couple more things and then I'm done gushing.
I think what really made these two books easily some of the best I've ever read was the author's willingness to show the ugly as well as the beautiful. Most authors are too worried about readers disliking their characters to really show the ugly stuff...but not De. Her willingness to be brave as an author was so rewarding to me as a reader and her ability to zig when every author out there would have zagged made these two books unforgettable. I was constantly surprised, that never happens to me any more. These characters will live with me for a long time and I have no doubt I will read these books over and over.
