I loved this book. It's so sweet and fun. The characters were wonderful, and the side characters had heaps of personality. I was left thinking of the story and the characters well after I had finished. It was over too soon! I want more of these characters and their lives. It makes you root for the characters, cheer for them, and cry with them. It explores relationships between friends, parents, siblings, and it explores prejudices and expectations and really gets into the heart of "who we are is who we choose to be".
It's a great first novel, and I'm so looking forward to the next book.
The fast-paced introduction to Elle and Justin is a humorous and clever opening scene. In a succession of imaginative "no way!" and "it could happen" events, you get a quick taste of the author's ability to set a scene and to build tension. Our senses are fully engaged via the subtext as we feel the emotions of her characters. Gallagher effectively sets the stage for a story that lives up to a standard set very high by her great intro hook.
My new author forgiveness reading filter was not needed for "Love at First Ink." There was little to no work on my part to stay engaged. I quickly forgot I was reading a new author's first work. That's rare.
I felt like Bridget Gallagher's writing and story-telling in 'Love at First Ink' is pretty advanced as compared to other first-timers I've read. It will be fun to follow her writing career and to read her next releases.
In addition to the great opening hook, all the required elements of a romance novel are there. I like the characters. They are real and consistently relate-able. The author uses internal/self-dialogue well, and she writes very fluid conversation. I found myself drawn into the settings...and repeatedly craving fresh-baked croissants!
A fine first effort, by a first-time author with some decent writing chops. Recommended. Great entertainment for the few bucks price of admission, and a great way to support a brand new author too.
BTW, Ms. Gallagher: how about posting a croissant recipe and/or a croissant baking "how to" on your website?!
I've been under a lot of stress lately and this book gave me the perfect escape. I laughed and my heart soared as I cheered for Justin and Elle. I felt like I was there in this magical smoky mountain town with its inspiring vistas and warm, genuine characters. I wanted to stay at the Inn and help out Jess. And in my heart, I was there! I was part of the family & could smell the amazing croissants. This book gave me a virtual weekend trip to the mountains, with warm new friends, and swoon-worthy romance - along with inspiration to be true to yourself and living an authentic life. If you need an escape, you will love hanging out in Woodbine!
I look forward to reading the next in the series, reading this one with a glass of wine on my porch on this warm weekend was a great way to unwind.
I would note that the romance is very PG. It's fun, but not steamy.
