"Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress"
Is the world really falling apart? Is the ideal of progress obsolete? This novel is very smooth. It flows nd is a just conclusion for the trials of the Murdochs and of course Dante and Charisse.
In regard to Charisse, she does the right thing by Evan and seems to become resigned with her status with him. Her behavior is similar to Dante's in that she used what she had to get what she wanted.
Leila knew what was being asked of her to do in order t save Evan was wrong and she had reservations, Charisse had none. Both showed the depths as to what they were willing to do for the man they loved. I don't know if Charisse was driven more for her hate of Dante than her love for Evan. But, she did what she had to do.
Evan showed his flaws, Terry got over his flaws. C.J. showed she had backbone, that what you see is not necessarily what it is.
Dante, Dante, Dante. His egotistical, conniving ways caught up with him. The gamer got gamed.
Suspenseful, I could not put the novel down until my eyes refused to cooperate.
I love Shelly's writing style. It is thought provoking. I ownn and have read all of her novels including those written as L.S. Childers and Shelly Stratton. If you have not read "The Right Manuever" as L. S. Childers, I suggest reading it.
Since this is the last in the series, I am really afraid of giving away details to readers who aren't lucky enough to have nabbed an advance copy (blows on fingertips) but lemme just say... this book is as good as you hope it is. You don't get answers right away... a basic wrap up of story lines... nawl. Shelly wouldn't do that to us! There's still a whole story to tell before we get to THE END. There's action, suspense and drama to the very. last. page.
And Dante. OOOH WEEE DANTE. He vexes me so MUCH. But I feel like he got what he deserved... and I can't say anymore!!!!
I implore you to cop this book and put it directly into your face.
So looking forward to more work from Shelly... she knows she can write her tail off!
Everything comes full circle in this book except for Aunt Ida stepping in to voice her opinions and providing a little advice from the past. Evan’s fear of leaving his family is evident and causing him to act out. Leila’s love for Evan is definitely proven when she rather gives to the enemy to keep her husband out of jail. Terrence shocked me by stepping up to help the family at a crucial time especially to keep everything their father built.
Paulette experiences a lot from her overbearing mother-in-law to her new babysitter turning out to be more than she expected and not in a good way. I loved that it brought her and Antonio closer together making them finally stand in their truth. C. J. shocked me the most because at first I didn’t trust her but in this book I realized she is down for her new family. She truly loves Terrence especially after what she has given up to be with him.
Last but definitely least is that darn Dante. I wanted to jump in this book and smack him. He is one of those characters that tries so hard to hurt others not getting the only one he is hurting is himself. Dante got under my skin because he could have taken the olive branch handed to him and joined the family but he had his own agenda. How is that working out for you, Dante?
I have enjoyed this whole series but To Love & Betray is by far my favorite. I love when a book has me on the edge of my seat. Shelly Ellis has a way of making you want to invest in the characters she shares with you. It is evident in her writing, plot and structure that she cares about her reader’s experience. I look forward to reading more of this author’s work.
