Diandra is your average woman in her late twenties, who's just realized she and her husband of nine years have finally conceived. That good news is shattered by the sudden death of her husband Jonah. Enter Lizbeth, the homeless woman who discovers Jonah's body and also happens to be a former cop. As the two get to know each other and Diandra helps Lizbeth get back on her feet, they form a special friendship.
Things are starting to look up for Diandra as she carries the baby and falls in love with Lizbeth. Only one problem, her very jealous, supposedly dead husband shows up at the house and lashes out at his wife in jealousy of her new lover. After the attack she's got a load of other problems to deal with..a new baby, blood bags, fangs, and a suave new shape-shifting vampire of a mentor named Eamon. Let the fun begin!
I really enjoyed this book. The author does a wonderful job creating an engrossing story line and cultivating the relationship between Diandra and Lizbeth. She uses just the right amount of humor in her writing, and the result is an entertaining escape that reading a book should always be. I'm anxious to start the next book in the series to see what the future holds for these characters.
The characters are beautifully described and I imagined Diandra as an Adelle type. Jonah, though he was only in the first chapter of the book, was a man I could understand loving. I can see why Diandra is so destroyed when he is killed. She is young, widowed, pregnant...it couldn't get much worse for her. At least he left her with financial security. She starts to see that he might not be who she thought he was. How could he have left her so much when other cop friends were struggling to make ends meet? Lizbeth comes into the story and figures all that out. What starts as a friendship, and an odd one at that, turns into something more. This is a lesbian romance with f/f scenes for adults only.
I would warn vampire lovers - this is not the normal vampire romance. There are no vamp love scenes and no blood drinking. The series is called Just One Bite and it is about how so many people's lives can be changed with a single bite. This book sets up the series and I think the next one will be more vampire heavy. If that is what you are looking for, and I know I am, ON TO BOOK 2!
The novel was well written and I was hooked right away. The author's characters seemed very real to me, and she did a wonderful job of giving us complete insight into them. My heart went out to Diandra's character. In the first pages of the book she appears to be a completely average woman who is happily married. That is, until she loses her husband in a violent attack and becomes a widow. Diandra befriends a woman named Lisbeth Snyder, who is the woman who found her husband's body and ultimately changes Diandra's life as she knows it. Another notable character in the story is Eamon. He is the vampire sent by the council to show Diandra the ropes and fill her in on the rules. I really like his personality because there appears to be a subtle humor and lightness to him, but you get the impression he has a darker side too. I really hope to see him have a prominent spot in future books and the chance to learn more about him.
Glass gives us a little of everything in her first novel. There is the paranormal element, some mystery, and romance. It is apparent a lot of thought and imagination went into this novel, and although the book isn't long, the storyline isn't lacking. The book ended in such a way that you are aware the story will continue, but the ending wasn't abrupt. The story still felt complete and at the same time left you with the curiosity to continue to the next book.
