When I first saw this series, I have to admit... I was a little dismissive of it. All I saw was the subject of superheroes lives & thought "Oh, this is a ripoff of 'Noble Causes'", which made me suspicious of it. After all, there's a lot of people who have made their own versions of popular comics & characters. After reading only about 10 of the strips, I realized that I owed this strip a HUGE apology for not giving it more credit.

Love & Capes follows the daily life of the superhero Mark (the Crusader) & his girlfriend Abby after she is told Mark's biggest secret. She then finds that she has to deal with the mundane & exotic problems of dating a superhero. The plus side? Getting to jet to any location in the world for their date. The minus? Having to deal with her hair afterwards. (As well as having to put up with Mark's superhero ex-girlfriend.)

I really can't say how much I love this comic, although I will say that I think it's frakking awesome. It really does deserve more attention than what it gets now, since with all of the superhero movies & such that have come out, this is the perfect comic to read. It's especially good to give to that person that may not be into the whole Marvel & DC scene, but still likes the idea of reading about superheroes & their lives. The characters in this strip are much more human & easier to relate to than the heroes in Marvel & DC, so it's easier for the average reader to get into the comic.

Now as far as the art goes, I love it. This is one of my favorite styles out there & I like how the characters all interact with each other. I mean... sometimes when I've read some of the love interests in some of the more mainstream comics, the interactions seem a little forced. But with these comics?

Those who grew up with the Silver-age DC Comics (especially Mr. and Mrs. Superman stories) or fans of 1990s LOIS AND CLARK NEW ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN TV show will love this series. The story deals with Abby who runs a book store with her sister and learns that her new accountant boy friend is really a Superman type super hero belonging to The Liberty League. The book is wonderfully done as the reader follows Abby's introduction into the super hero community which include a Batman like hero name Dark Blade and her rival for Mark's affections being Amazonia a spoof on Wonder Woman. Even heroes aren't flawless with their wide range of emotions include Major Might a captain marvel spoof which makes one wonder what Clark Kent really feels toward his own big red cheese copy cat. The spoof don't stay just with DC Spoofs as Mark find himself jealous of a spoof on their universe's Spider-man movie when all he ever had was an ice capades show. One of my favorite stories in this book is when Mark turn to the Dr. Fate or Dr. Strange spoof of the IDW hero universe to have his powers removed for 24 hours so that he can peacefully enjoy Christmas with Abby's family and learn how much pain one can feel without their powers.

I really enjoyed the Love and Capes series. The stories are interesting and I really enjoy Zahler's sense of humor. I think the pacing is perfect. I also thought the Kindle edition was great (don't tell Abby!). Mostly I had no problem reading a full page on my screen, but when occasionally there was a word I couldn't make it, I just double-click the screen on the problematic panel and it becomes bigger and easier to read.

Five stars and two thumbs up all around. I will be looking for more of Zahler's work.

Okay, I should probably first state that I am a sucker for well-told superhero stories and a romantic old softie at heart. With that out of the way, Love and Capes is one of the best relationship stories I have ever read. The characterisation comes across as crisp, knife sharp and believable and the storyline itself brings a splendid homage to the superhero genre even as it pokes gentle fun at it.

Abigail Tennyson and Mark Spencer stand on the verge of having their casual relationship turn into a serious one. But Mark faces a personal dilemma: he firmly believes that a good relationship should be based on trust and he has a rather large secret: he is the powerful superhero Crusader. He overcomes this problem in the simplest of ways, by sharing his secret with Abigail. That is the point where things begin to get complicated...

What makes this story so amazing is that for all the humour, superhero elements, soap operatic complications and occasional world-threatening menace it is at its heart a tale about two people in love who both work hard at making that love survive and thrive. It is also a tale about their friends, relatives, personal lives and how all of these interrelate. In this story, love does not conquer all but trust, friendship, humanity and hard work combine to nourish love. It is a story about people and how ordinary people and superheroes share one important trait -- they are all very, very human.

If you enjoy a story where romance and friendship take centre stage, I think you will enjoy Love and Capes. If you enjoy humour that is nonetheless serious at its heart, you will find plenty of it here. I firmly recommend it.
