I am really disappointed with this book. I have felt like I haven't been getting my money's worth with recent books. Half of the book is an excerpt! There was nothing to the story. I think the standards have dropped considerably with the different series. I love the full novels. I just wish a book would come out with more to it. It breaks my heart.

Each one of the short stories, a most difficult form of fiction, draws on previous characters and events, letting us know what has happened and what will happen. This quick read introduces the reader to more of the CSAR members, lets the reader into the complexities of what the pilots and medical personnel have to deal with, and gives an insight into what makes these very human people tick. Someday, Mr. Buchman might compile a collection of all the related stories, thereby providing continuity.

Sweet story, missing the emotional connection

I read LOVE IN A COPPER LIGHT by ML Buchman, on his website, as offered for a few days during his "Ides of Matt" monthly promotion. I'm a big fan of his The Night Stalkers Series, having read most of them. This series is probably my favorite of his many different ones. Something about this story, wherein Penny and Barry, who are both the best of the best (she, a Night Stalkers helicopter pilot and he, a medic) is very sweet. Coworkers in this high-octane environment, highly skilled, and comfortable with each other...at least professionally. The problem now? Sometimes promises made must be kept, especially when a man promised himself if the opportunity ever presented, he wouldn't remain quiet. It's a sweet premise when coworkers or friends are secretly in love and won't dare admit it or risk the working relationship or friendship by taking things a step further.

The problem, I believe, why this story didn't resonate with me, as so many of Mr Bachman's shorts do, is that the emotional responses in the tough warriors fell flat and was sometimes missing. I wanted to feel what Barry felt in that moment when he dared approach Penny. I wanted her to feel *something*. I read to spend time with the bad-ass, strong women (like Mr Buchman writes) and see the similarities (human emotion) we share, as I'm as unlike his heroes and heroines as possible. I want to see true love conquer all. I want to see how a chance at real love with a guy like Barry makes all the difference to a woman like Penny.

Clever, well-designed title.

Sensuality level- mild
Language- moderate to adult
Violence- rated R, but not overly graphic

Excellent!! Just finished this short story, and I'm still feeling misty-eyed from the emotion that comes through. Buchman is the master of portraying so many emotions in so short a time, from the intensity and adrenalin of battle, to the wonder and fierceness of the first recognition of attraction and love. I highly recommend this book, particularly if you've not read a M.L. Buchman military novel, for a true taste of his writing style and technical knowledge of military special ops life. Excellent!!
