This is a delightful book, especially for any artist or writer whose work has been slammed by critics. Imagine attending parties where the highlight of the evening is to have someone read aloud, and mock, your book of poetry (thank God you published it under "anonymous"). Elizabeth is sensitive and reclusive in the first place, and such humiliation does not motivate her to try to get out more.

Imagine finding out your fiance is your nemesis, the anonymous Critic whose devastating reviews made your little book of poetry famously awful.

The intereactions between Elizabeth and Alexander are delightful and witty. Her aunt and his gardener are hilarious characters with their rivalry in raising champion roosters.

The climax may be hard for modern American readers to understand or identify with, but fans of Regency novels will know that manners and reputations were maintained at great cost, even personal sacrifice.

But fear not, we read romances because we want to escape into a colorful world where conflicts are resolved and life is good, and we enjoy spending time with these fictional characters as we take a few hours from our own hectic world.

their lives mature to a adult understanding.

An unusual story for an historical romance and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The story's unfolding was not what I expected.
