Rafe Mancuso and Sara Rios used to be partners on the police force and they have been asked to work security at a high profile auction. When Sara is taken hostage, it's Rafe who jumps into action to save her. Because of his heroic actions, Rafe finds himself as the next focus of the "Bachelor Blog" which is the last place he wants to be featured. He has always had feelings for his former partner, but he has never believed that she would return those feelings. As the attention from being featured on the blog continues, it becomes too much for Rafe and he heads out of town.
With Rafe having headed out of town, Sara now has the spotlight on her, which is the worst possible situation since she is supposed to be laying low due to the fact she will have to testify in a murder trial. When gifts start appearing, she gets freaked out and knows she has to disappear. The only place she wants to be is with Rafe, so she seeks him out. As the two spend time together, they finally give into their feelings.
When trouble finds the duo again, they have to work as a team to stay alive. While they've always trusted one another in a work environment, can they trust one another where love is concerned?
I really enjoyed this book and the conflict that both Sara and Rafe had to face both externally and internally. They had history and chemistry, which made this story that much more engaging. I am a huge fan of Carly Phillips books and this one is definitely one of my favorites!
Sara has never wanted a long term relationship as most of the people in her family (all cops) are divorced. So she thinks because she is a cop, she will never be able to get married and have a long term relationship. Rafe feels the opposite and wants a big family. Rafe comes from a big loving family. He has some characters in his family that will make you laugh. Rafe and Sara felt a connection when they were partners at work, but they never acted on it. Now that Sara is staying with Rafe, things heat up. I just loved Rafe and how well he interacted with his family. He was so patient with his family, and especially with Sara. You can tell that Sara loved being around Rafe's family and yearned for something like that but she never had. It was a good story with action, suspense, and romance. I loved catching up with characters from the last book. I strongly encourage you to read the book. I voluntarily read an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book.
Sara and Rafe had both been injured at the end of KMIYC, and this book started off just before that so you could see what happened. Both were put on medical leave so they could recuperate from their injuries. Rafe went off to his hometown to rest, and Sara - who needed to be scarce due a case she had been on - followed him in search of protection.
The suspense in this book was fantastic. There were a couple different subplots going on that had me sitting on the edge of my seat and staying up late to read. I loved Rafe's big, boisterous family, and seeing a loner like Sara fit in so seamlessly was heartwarming. Both main characters were smart and strong and willing to do whatever it took to get the job done. The question was whether Sara could do the same in their personal lives.
This author does a fantastic job of making secondary characters loveable, and I always find myself wanting to know their stories as well. I liked how the story touched on Nick and Angel's lives, and Uncle Pirro and Aunt Vi were hilarious. But best of all was Rafe and Sara's strong connection - a connection that went beyond the physical from the very start. These two were great together, and I loved their HEA.
