The premise is interesting; two types of shifters (one dark/evil and one protective/good). Humans are apparently unaware of the mass killings to their kind by the evil shifters. Seems to me that there would be undeniable clues, but the humans remain unenlightened. The "Good" shifters (other than the Hero) seemed rather useless in guarding the humans. I did like the main characters, but the Heroine just didn't seem to have much depth. The Hero was more interesting, but although the reader is told frequently that he has massive guilt for his past misdeeds, I didn't really feel it. I did like the Heroine's Fates Guardian, who was described as a "cross-dressing male the size of a Mack truck." Although, these "Fates" did seem rather inept at guarding their Chala charges, since the Heroine was the last one alive in the World.
It's a promising start to a different sort of Shifter series. The next book apparently will continue the plot and will concentrate on Brandon, one of the supporting characters in this book. I'll probably continue the series.
The author is amazing with building her characters and letting the reader get to know them. You can actually feel Gavin's frustration with everything and feel sorry for him, well part of the time. And Sydney is one of those woman who knows their mind and has no problem letting you know what she wants. And you also have William OMG I just LOVE him, he's the best! A definite must read with new types of paranormal characters, at least to me.
