Among other deterrents, Darby has a crush on someone else, she has just finished treatment for breast cancer, and she is one of the most awkward and klutzy people imaginable. But she owns it. What she doesn’t deal with as easily is her cancer. She does not want to be known as “Cancer Girl”, and does not want people to know, because they treat her differently.
Reid, who is an incredibly confident and handsome guy, is sometimes mistakenly labeled gay because of his chosen profession, making wedding dresses. He is not looking, gets roped into a situation that brings him into the same orbit as Darby, and not happily, at first. But in spite of himself, he finds Darby’s eccentricities endearing and starts considering possibilities. Unfortunately, he has been the caregiver for his mother, who died of breast cancer. This becomes a problem mainly caused by well-meaning friends, trying to keep each one from being hurt because of their cancer-related pasts.
There were times that I just wanted them to talk to each other and stop trying to figure each other out. But then they WOULD talk, but totally misinterpret what the other said. HMMM, just like real life? The plot thickens, and then..
You will just have to read the book and believe me, you will find it was totally worth it‼
So, when I read Reid Hudson, MacKenna Jones’ side-kick from Saying I Do, was the co-star in Love Everlasting, I couldn’t wait to read it. While Reid may not be your typical tailor and wedding planner, he’s a guy who knows who he is and what he stands for. He’s tall, built, and handsome, and loves to sew – get over it.
Darby Livingstone, with her strength of purpose and a will to survive, is a wonderfully written character. She’s sassy and fun, but also unsure of herself at times – a trait we all can identify with.
And what can I say about Hugh King. We all know the type, right? His self-loving character was written to a T.
Love Everlasting is another winner, right from it’s fresh looking cover to the very last page. The subplot is one many of us have been touched by, and in my opinion, was handled with care without being sensationalized.
So take a chance on Love Everlasting. After all, life is about taking chances, even if there are no guarantees.
I also loved how this book connected with the Stewart Island books, especially the book "Saying I Do" where we first meet Reid. Reid has taken over running the wedding coordinator business as Mac has moved to Stewart Island with her hubby. Her good friend, Darby, needs the help of Reid to make the costumes for the upcoming Cinderella production and since he's a wiz at sewing wedding gowns he's the perfect person to help her out. Darby is trying get the attention of Cinderella's Prince Charming, otherwise known as Hugh.
I loved the honest, straight forward portrayal of life after a cancer diagnosis and treatment. Both Darby and Reid have had to deal with the "big C" and both are too gun shy to move forward amidst all the uncertainty of what they've dealt with up to now. It was a refreshing look at a sticky situation and it was handled marvelously.

Darby Livingstone is a veterinary assistant with a menagerie of cats and a dog, she's had breast cancer but her hair is growing back and she going for life full-throttle, including trying out for the part of Cinderella in a local production to support Sunflower House which provides accommodation to cancer patients while they are having treatment at the local hospital. Unfortunately being nearly six foot tall and a bit of a klutz means Darby is more likely to get one of the ugly sister roles!
Darby first meets Reid at a wedding, where she mocks him for fending off advances from drunken wedding guests before being soaked in red wine when the brides bouquet ricochets off Reid's glass, just like Cinderella Darby escapes into the night leaving her stained shoes behind.
Reid Hudson is that rarity, a straight male wedding planner, his mother died from breast cancer and his BFF MacKenna Jones has roped him into making the costumes for the production of Cinderella, he was going to refuse until he discovered that he would be working alongside the beautiful and charming Darby.
I was really enjoying this and then, about three-quarters of the way through it just seemed to run out of steam a little bit, the Cinderella riff kind of wore off and the inability of either character to commit because of their cancer fears became repetitive.
However, those were little niggles, this was still a fun, sweet romance between a man who can do it all and a woman who needs someone she can rely on.
Reid has suffered his own heartache and has avoided relationships. Fate however, had it’s own ideas......
