The premise is silly--rich boy Derek needs a fake boyfriend for the holidays because he has told everyone close to him that he is seeing Marcus, a fireman, who simply is a figment of his imagination. How Derek winds up hiring Luke for the job (for $30,000) is a bit off-the-wall but kind of cute as well.
Luke needs the money to restore his family's saloon, and a pal who runs an above-board gay escort agency hooks him up with Derek. There is instant distrust between them. But the fact that despite a noticeable limp Luke turns out to look just like the type of guy Derek has imagined his made-up boyfriend would look like is even sweeter.
What happens after Derek finds out quite by accident why Luke has a limp turns this story into a wonderfully smooth and somewhat angst-free romance that works because these two are simply developed so well by author Scott.
Not really a holiday book, and we could have used a cameo of Derek and Luke on the cover with that snowman, but well worth relaxing with all the way.
Just a quick warning for any other hopeless romantics out there, read this with a glass of water next to you to rehydrate. I know I needed several glasses full to get through this book... lots and lots of happy tears. Luke and Derek so perfectly complement one another and their love story was an amazing adventure of two people meant to be finding out just how incomplete each was without the other. One of the very best Christmas romances I have ever read! And one more kudo for whoever came up with and then made the cover happen. It was absolute perfection! BRAVO for a total package that is perfection!
What I loved about this is how much it felt like Christmas. There was the hustle and bustle of having to work, dealing with finances, going to Christmas parties and visiting with what can be overbearing family members. I also feel, that both Derek and Luke found a little bit of happiness once they stopped trying to do what everyone wanted them to and did what made them happiest.
The attraction between the two started out as a slow, steady burn but after the first Christmas event that flame intensified in all the best ways. There’s something about the way Scott writes her love scenes that doesn’t feel fake. Instead it feels natural and there’s something about the scenes that leave your blood running hot.
My favorite part of this was the fact that I could see it play like a movie in my head. In the end, this book left me happy and feeling like I had spent my morning curled up in a warm bed, a cup of my favorite coffee on the bedside table and someone curled up next to me. That’s kind of the best feeling you can get after reading a book.
Here she has given us two marvelous main characters who are worlds apart but who encounter similar inner turmoil.
Derek, an unwilling loner due to his job and his station in life, has always been sure of himself until landing in the CEO seat of his family business. He comes up with a scheme that he believes will encourage others to see him as “normal”.
Enter Luke, a proud man from a proud background. He, too, has always been sure of where he was going to take his life; until an unfortunate accident which left him with insecurities he is altogether unfamiliar with.
RJ has conceived a rather unique way of these two merging their lives. Be prepared with the tissues, you will need them along the way *wink*. But mostly you will find yourself grinning and laughing and on occasion you may want to bat one or both characters up side the head and tell them to wake up *wink*. But one thing is sure, we don’t always decide who we fall in love with!
Derek needs to come up with a real person to fill the shoes of his made-up boyfriend, and Luke needs at least 20 grand to finish repairs on his family’s bar. Luke agrees to play Marcus, Derek’s boyfriend, at 5 Christmas events for 30 grand (minus his friend’s agency’s cut).
This story is only around 150 pages or so, but it is so full of feels! I loved it. I read it straight through. The author even manages to fit two mildly steamy scenes into this Christmas story with a surprising amount of plot.
Is it predictable? Of course! Did I care? Not one bit. I will be checking out more works by this author.
