That said the book is filled with entertaining and enlightening stories about Burns, his wife and times. If you can get past the dated styling it's worth the read.
George Burns plays from his strength here-- this is first person narrative from a comedian who made a living using person person monologues. The fond and warm memories growing up poor among a large family in a neighborhood of first generation immigrants are a great reflection on the optimism of the American experience. This is a wildly enjoyable collection of stories told about multiple sequential failures that never resulted in self-doubt. The delight of eventual success seems all the sweeter.
There is a lack of depth to Burns' story, and I would have like a more personal touch, but his characteristic "voice" did shine through. The info on his celebrity friends was a bit lacking, but plenty of stories from the early years. There are whole decades of info missing from his story. My biggest complaint is that there was no context provided: no years, no historical backdrop. It's just all about how he made it big at last after years of trying and his courting of Gracie.
Still enjoyed it though.
Otherwise I'm sure the book is exactly what she wanted.
