Review

"Tara Lee Reed's Love Him Not possesses all those juicy traits of modern-day courtship: the support of great friends, the goosebumps over the guy, the over-thinking as intimacy grows or ebbs, and the delirium when things go right. Readers guide the loveable Elle Masters toward many futures with Mr. Wright in this fun, witty book. The author manages to find nearly every real-life situation a couple endures on the way to (potential) romantic bliss, which makes the story relatable and incredibly hard to put down." - Patience Bloom, Romance is My Day Job.

"... a very gutsy move... fascinating to see a contemporary love story unfold, or crash and burn, depending on which path was picked... will remind readers vividly of their own dating experiences and how something small and innocuous can lead to blow ups, brush offs, and booty calls instead of an HEA. The fun for readers is that, unlike real life, they can go back, over and over, until they have their happy ending... this incredibly ambitious book is well worth the frustration of finding a happy ending." - InD'tale Magazine

"SUPER-fun, and perfect for the busy woman who has only five to 15 minutes to read." - Andrea Traynor, MommyGearest.com

"Highly inventive scenes, vivid characterizations, and fast-paced dialogue make Love Him Not a fun, chocolates-in-bed kind of indulgence read. 5-stars to Tara K. Reed on this charming book! - Jan Moran, Flawless

I'm a guy. The thought of reading a story that's essentially stepping into the shoes of a woman on the rebound is not exactly the type of thing that tops my "books to read" list. But -- full disclosure -- Tara is a friend of mine, and she sent me "Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda" to check out whenever I felt like it...so a few weeks later, I've done just that.

And I'm floored. I expected to spend maybe 30 minutes of my recent flight from DC to San Antonio checking out the book to be nice, but I honestly spent the ENTIRE FLIGHT trying to figure out how to end up with "Mr. Wright." I couldn't put it down. It's kind of like Sex & the City, only wittier -- and the "choose your own adventure" element kicks in better than any actual Choose Your Own Adventure book ever did (and I read a lot of those as a kid). I just wish I could figure out how to "win," as I've dumped or been dumped what must be ten times by now.

Now, if you'll excuse me, Mr. Wright will be mine this time through...

This book was SO MUCH FUN!!! I read the description and thought, "Hmm... this sounds interesting." I checked it out on Goodreads and it had great reviews, so I downloaded it. I'm so glad I did!

This book was a "Choose Your Own Adventure" romance book. Super creative, right? In this book, you play Elle Masters, a girl looking for love after a recent break-up. You meet a cute guy named Nick at a bar and are faced with your first choice. This book ended up making me extremely grateful that my husband and I went from very close friends to dating because the modern dating world seems filled with landmines. In this story, one wrong move can ruin your chances with Nick forever! Some choices are obviously big ones- if you haven't heard from Nick after a few days, do you call or wait for him to call? Some choices seem unimportant- do you side with the girl or the guy in the story Nick's telling you? However, each choice leads you on a different path.

For a while, I was frustrated with this book because I kept getting bad endings!! But I just had to keep reading to find all the endings. I actually cheated a little to get my first happy ending by flipping through pages in order to get to a scene I hadn't been to, then going backwards from there to a page that was familiar. Sue me, I really wanted a "happily ever after!"

Because certain choices lead to happiness while others lead to heartbreak, this book is an educational read. It shows you how certain dating choices are perceived by the opposite sex and how you can sabotage your happiness. It was fun to get the varying opinions of Elle's two best friends. I really feel like I learned a lot about modern dating! I want to share this book with my single lady friends. :)

This book is hours of fun.

This book was soooo much fun. And exciting. And satisfying!

I enjoyed this book for many many many reasons, the two most important being:

(1) I hate when characters in books make stupid, god-awful decisions, that not only I would never make, but that inevitably ruin everything. So being able to make "better" decisions was instantly appealing and insanely gratifying.

(2) We all play the shoulda, wuolda, coulda game. All. Of. Us. So being able to play, readjust, and replay different scenarios, without the real life high stakes and potentially disastrous outcomes, was highly enjoyable.

Did I mention that this book stars YOU?

It is YOU making the decisions, some seemingly innocuous like "order take-out for date night in, or cook his favorite meal from scratch" or what you should wear on your first date, but then they get increasingly more complex like, should you call it a night or see where all this chemistry leads, should you invite him to dinner with your parents, or is it too soon? And my absolute favorite: do you gently trick nudge your long-term boyfriend into proposing, or do you continue to wait for him to get the hint.

These scenarios were perfect. I would roll my eyes and make what I thought was a 'no-brainer' decision, only to end up end tears. Or I'd be forced into a corner to make the WORST DECISION EVER only to be pleasantly surprised by the outcome.

And the very very very best part is that you get to see, first hand, that there are some situations with the same outcome, regardless of how you play it.

I must warn you though, most of these have less than desirable endings; some are amicable and some are awful, but some are JUST RIGHT.

I LOVED the Choose Your Own Adventure books when I was growing up so when I saw a grown-up chick-lit-ish offering? I jumped at it. (Didn't hurt that it was free on Amazon at the time.)
Okay, so I chose my path and read it through and didn't end up entirely surprised because I chose the path that I would have chosen back in my single days and it ended pretty much exactly how it ended. And now I want to wallow in a pint (or four) of ice cream.
Exactly how I used to.
All that being said, I freaking love this book.
I'm half tempted to go back in immediately and try again .... but I'm going to give the book "me" a chance to breathe and I'll revisit it again after a couple of other books.
Well done, Tara Lee Reed.
You owe me a pint of ice cream, though.
