LOVE IN A HOPELESS PLACE is a boxed set of five novellas and short stories. Her individual novellas are brave little works, well written, with a nice tangy after burn: it is rewarding to see women taking chances with a subject like this, but then Virginia Woolf, E.L. James, Colette, Mary Renault, Annie Proulx and others took the chances and they are famous for it. The consistently fine works included in this set are `Sub-Prime' (a rather gruesome turkey killing factory where a man and a woman find a strange bond),' Escape To Love' (a mother, a missing child and a prison break by a rapist murderer and a strangely intriguing banker escapee who begins a new love story for the mother and rescued daughter), `The Chosen' (a deeply touching bizarre tale of a man, his commitment to a Thai girl, his need to make money with the assistance of a comrade who hears the dreams, watches him die and visits his kept girl to assist in the mourning process), `Angela' (a limo driver picks up a woman who has the ability to predict the limo driver's incipient child - show will be called Angela) and Love in a Hopeless Place (A richly nuanced story about an unsatisfied married woman who falls in perfect love with another woman at the workplace).
Calin has found the right boundaries to graphically describe physical moments without going overboard: she writes sensually and erotically but not pornographically. She understands that human condition - that powerful magnet love has in driving the way we traverse the territory of our lives, attempting to survive in a chaotic world not always amenable to fulfilling relationships. This is a collection of deeply impressive tales. Grady Harp, June 14
The novel that deals with domestic violence and disability, it is a sad commentary on life that this has to be the subject of any of books but it is a fact of life for so many in the world today. I found it difficult to read it considering the fact that I'm a survivor, but in the end I made it through, the ending was a nice surprise. Wish that my situation had ended so beautifully.
The books and stories are very short so it's difficult to tell you about them without giving away the ending or the plot all I can say is that this is one of the better collections to come out this year and it is well worth a read. All of us need a gentle reminder, from time to time, that the world in which we live is not always peaches and cream.
Sub-Prime was the first story. It was short and bitter sweet. It was about two people brought together by unfortunate circumstances. The moral is you have to do what you have to do to survive.
Escape to Love is the second story. This story is about an abused woman and an escaped convict. The story is so touching. She risks everything to help this man because he saves her daughter and because she loves him.
The Chosen is the third story. This story is real short. It’s about people working to keep their dreams alive.
Angela is the forth story. This is a short story. But it’s about a limo driver and a woman who can predict the future. She basically saves his life.
Love in a Hopeless Place Is the fifth story. This was a little longer. Its about a woman in a bad marriage.
Emma Calin’s collection is filled with well written and engaging tales that are well worth the read. And at less than 200 pages it makes a great read for a lazy afternoon, a plane ride, or just about any time.
