One of his key insights, for instance, which stays with me, is that in order to heal, one must be able to imagine a NEW life -- based on new choices and circumstances -- that will be aligned with one's own highest potential and greatest joy. Often, the body gets sick as a kind of symbol or sign of some pain in one's life or because one has chosen, at some point, (consciously or subconsciously) that unless a certain problem or life dilemma is resolved, one would rather not live. This death-wish, if you will, can be reversed through mind/body techniques and by a new spiritual commitment, which reorients our lives in a hopeful new direction.
After demonstrating for the reader the benefits of self-responsibility and personal empowerment tools for holistic healing, and his own success in healing HIV-AIDS while coming to love himself and his sexuality, Patrice recounts a new stage in his spiritual journey. Patrice comes to see that personal development tools, while very useful for happiness and health, are based in a certain individualism and self-will (in terms of the chakra system, personal empowerment is often based in the first three chakras, without engaging sufficiently the higher chakras). The spiritual journey, by contrast, calls for surrender to a bigger Divine Love or Spirit. Patrice takes this new step of surrender; he longs to know the deeper love and faith from Spirit (or God), which will allow him to grow beyond his limitations. In the process Patrice visits key spiritual teachers, such as Amma and Sai Baba-- and he is visited by Christ.
For the next book: I'd love to find out how Patrice may manage to live both Surrender and Self-Empowerment. Perhaps these two guiding notions, instead of being polarized as dichotomies, may actually be fused. We may live with health, well-being, ambition, generosity, while also being ever ready to give up all at the behest of Spirit.
