This is extremely good for a debut book. I would surely recommend this author and would definitely read any future books she writes.
This book is about a bridal consultant who wants to have a beautiful wedding herself but hasn't found "the one" yet. She has a witty and sometimes bitter sarcasm. This story is written in mostly first person. This is a clean Christian book. I think any age would enjoy it especially YA readers. Also I want to mention the adorable cover, very pretty!
Izze, the main character, narrates the majority of the story (with occasional switches to third person for Miles’ POV) and a la Gilmore Girls she often talks right to the reader. She’s quirky and witty and I would so want to be friends with her if she weren’t a figment of Joy Palmer’s imagination! Her relationship with God is a natural extension of her character and while there are a lot of very touching moments involved with this element of the story there are also quite a few opportunities for the author’s adorable humor to shine through too.
Besides the faith and the humor, there’s a delicious romance brewing at the Ever After bridal salon. Izze and Miles don’t get off to the best start (well… it depends on which one of them you ask) but that just fuels some fantastic banter & hoarse-voiced emotion and makes that first kiss (and the ones thereafter) all the more toecurlingly sweet. Miles is steady in his pursuit; Izze is her typical adorable-but-easily-frazzled self. I really liked getting to see the relationship from both perspectives – first person for Izze and third for Miles. It reminded me of Varina Denman’s Mended Hearts trilogy in that aspect, though Varina’s are more women’s fiction romance while Love, Lace, and Minor Alterations is definitely a rom-com! (And both are done really well!)
Cute, endearing, witty, and romantic – V. Joy Palmer’s debut novel is a perfect fit! Love, Lace, and Minor Alterations keeps a grin on your face but may bring a few tears to your eyes before all is said and done. Tucked away in the middle of this delightful romantic comedy is a message of hope and restoration, a reminder that trusting God requires more than just lip service (words or kisses! lol) but whenever He asks us to trust Him He’s waiting to catch our leap of faith with His open arms. If you love watching Say Yes to the Dress and/or Gilmore Girls or if you’re a fan of Melissa Tagg or Janice Thompson, you will absolutely want to run out right now and get a copy of Love, Lace, and Minor Alterations. I am looking forward to more from this author – and hopefully a series with these characters!
