Whew! What a great storyteller! Ms. Ryder has an excellent narrative that pulls you into the plot & characters from the beginning & makes you fall in love with them. As the reader, you can sense Miranda's turmoil & frustration at having her hands tied by her father. He's proud she's not just a pretty face & has her MBA but doesn't treat her like it. Her feelings for Lucas box her into a corner due to the animosity between him & her father. Her mother uses guilt to make her do what she wants. The one character I wasn't sure I liked was Miranda's mother. It seemed like she was willing to do anything, including throwing her daughter under the bus, to make sure her husband survived. The supporting characters are realistic & well developed. The plot reflects the tension & interactions between the characters . I really enjoyed this book & would recommend it to anyone who enjoys romance, baseball & moderate sex.
I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest opinion.
Miranda and Lucas have a history. Growing up Miranda had a secret crush on Lucas. Lucas' dad used to own the Knights baseball team and Miranda's dad bought it from him. Lucas has always felt that Miranda's dad, Seamus Callahan, stole the team from his dad.
Miranda's dad is a very active owner. Pretty much it's his way or the highway. The Knights baseball team is in trouble. Lucas has been assigned by the league to supposedly help turn the team around. If the team doesn't make the loan payment, the team will be sold. Is Lucas out for revenge?
I really enjoyed Miranda and Lucas' characters. The chemistry between them was incredible. Will they take a chance on love? Will secrets and misunderstandings prevent them from having a chance at love?
FYI, includes mature content. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
I loved the first book and couldn't wait to read about Miranda. I took a shine to her in the first book and wanted to know more about her. Well I got my wish and I really enjoyed living through Miranda and how her life would change. She is a feisty young lady when her team are in trouble and willing to make the radical changes needed. But what got me was how her loyalties were tied between her father and then the team. She is a passionate lady, proud of her achievements but she deserved every moment of her success. I was shocked at what happened to her near the end, because I did not see that coming. My heart broke for her because it was something I would hate to happen. Her and Lucas though.... Wow! They were hot and steamy. There were some issues with hidden agendas and I kept hoping they sorted it out because I loved them together.
Lucas. Wow! He is a man on a mission. And I was unsure of his motives at first. Revenge or truly putting the past in the past. I liked how broody he was, and how he didn't mind jumping into the job of turning the Knight's fortune around with both feet. Him as the mascot was sweet and hilarious at the same time, but it made me a nicer and more genuine person in my eyes. He slowly started to see that his past wasn't as true as he wanted it to be, so my heart hurt at him having to come to deal with the truths of the matter.
The secondary characters of Miranda's parents, Lucas's mom, Cole, Stacia and Jason really brought the book full circle and ensured I understood every little thing, but also showing me how vital having a close-knit team is.
Megan has a lovely writing style which captures you very quickly and ensnares you until you finished the book. The book was descriptive and creative, with a good amount of dialogue to make you feel like you were in the story itself. It isn't necessary to read the first book, but it'll just help with some of the secondary characters.
