5.0 out of 5 stars For the Love of Smooth Talker's Boots
By Chris Morrisette on September 9, 2016
I have been a fan and a friend of Shawn Casey O'Brien since 1976 when we met in Venice Beach California. For the better part of the next ten years we shared a love for the culture of the times, a veritable pastiche of Sex, Drugs and most importantly Rock n Roll.
Shawn and I became songwriting collaborators as well as fast friends, spending many days working towards individual and shared goals to make our respective artistic ways in the sprawling world that was 1970s Los Angeles.
Writing songs, working in bands, dreaming big about not just being rock stars but how to make a difference through literature, art and music.

My first exposure to Shawn as author was when I spent time as his proof reader during a prolific writing period where he developed his literary voice as much as his powerful singing voice and unique, proto rap stylings. I refer to his abilities as a "rapper" in that his rock vocals often incorporated as much spoken word poetry as melodic interpretation of the song material.

I bring this up because Shawn has written a book that perfectly evokes that period for me. I once had the opportunity to visit Tom Hayden with Shawn and witnessed first hand Shawn's acute grasp of the political realm. I admit that it somewhat surprised me how confident and assured he was, but then again I wasn't particularly surprised to discover the artist as activist.

A song we co-wrote entitled Smooth Talker's Boots recounts the adventures of Shawn's father, a Michigan politician. My own father being an Oregon politician, we were simpatico in our ability to relate to the more intimate and bizarre underbelly of the political sphere.

What impresses me most about For the Love of Longshots is the current of genuine insight; the touch of an uncommon man of the people who learned the art of change agency because he had no choice. He was just born that way.
For the Love of Longshots is a love story written by a remarkable man in love with people, helping them achieve their best interests no matter how unlikely that achievement might be.
The events recounted in these pages parallel musical and artistic events I had the privilege to share with my good friend, whom I lovingly referred to as ShoBro, the very honorable Shawn Casey O'Brien, man of the underdog, enabler of the Longshots of the world.
