The book flip flops from past to present and you get a sense of how Maddie has been treated and how she has loved. I don't want to spoil anything....but this a love triangle book between two brothers. Maddie got on my nerves because she certainly couldn't read hints or signs. I faulted her in the demise of the relationship, because she clearly didn't communicate what she wanted. She allowed and forgave a lot, and her resentment compounded year over year until it exploded like a volcano. She just couldn't spit out the words and tell people what she wanted and how it would be. Her timid - got to make everyone happy - got on my nerves.
The way the book just wraps up - "no hard feelings" - we are all friends and everything is good" didn't work for me either. I don't know but it seemed the characters didn't remain consistent. It wasn't bad, but it didn't hit it out of the park for me. It was a slow read at times for me. I lost interest and didn't feel the tension or angst that the author seemed to be trying to convey.
I guess I liked Maddy, she was okay. She wasn't very assertive, and honestly I felt like most of the book she was trying to avoid the situation as much as possible. Like it was just easier to avoid. She is back to be in her brothers wedding, and this sets up for a lot of togetherness with people Maddy seems to be more on board with avoiding rather then spending every day with them.
The two brothers in question are Gabe and Trent. Both are successful guys in their own very different ways, Trent is a soccer star, and Gabe is starting up his own business. But Gabe was clearly the far superior brother. Or maybe it was just me. I mean Trent just seemed overly confident, kind of a jerk, and just in general a self-important jerk. Gabe on the other hand is super sweet, and is nice to Maddy from day one. He stands off to side when he needs to, but he is always a steady presence in Maddy's life.
The thing about this book is that it goes back and forth between present and past, which is normally okay for me, but this was more then just flashbacks, it was literally a back and forth all the time. I felt like while it was important to get some of the background for these characters, it just messed with the pacing of the book and left it feeling more disjointed then anything else. Maybe it was just me.
I think the most important thing to mention about this book is it is like 98% angst. If you like angst then this is the book for you. If not then run away. I liked the book well enough, I liked Maddy, I liked Gabe, I was happy with the way things ended (I love a good epilogue). Little too much angst, but even so I would be willing to try out another book by this author.
I was in the outback in Australia when I came across this book on my Kindle so I couldn't check the reviews. ( NO INTERNET).............and I'm very glad I couldn't.
I couldn't stop thinking about the characters when I had to put the book down which tells me that I was invested in the story. Of course I was frustrated with both Trent and Maddy, him because he was so selfish and greedy and her because it took her sooooo long to admit who her heart truly belonged to. As for Gabe ......he has my vote for saint of the year. I was very happy about the ending and will try another book from this author
