A wonderful CD. Even more wonderful was the seller, who was patience and professionalism personified when my Bose didn't play the CD -- but in fact, as I learned later, my other machine did play it, and nicely indeed. (Who'd have thought that a Bose could be less able than a 20-year-old CD player?)

- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2016Ruth Etting graduated from the chorus line to singing solo in Chicago nightclubs, and began recording for Columbia in 1926. Her gangster husband’s persuasive powers gave her the pick of Tin Pan Alley’s new songs, and such was her popularity that the frequency of her recordings was maintained throughout the Great Depression. She had an idiosyncratic style, embellishing the melody by sliding around the notes. She needed a big voice for the theatre, which she reined in for the studio, where its clarity was ideally suited to the medium of recording. Her accompaniments were often quite sparse, with Rube Bloom on piano almost a constant, which gave the vocal more prominence, and created an air of intimacy with the listener. That successful formula resulted in approximately 200 sides over eleven years, many of which were the first recordings of songs that would become future standards. This very judicious selection includes her sole outing with Ted Lewis, and two of the six sides she recorded with Jay Wilbur in 1936. She was the subject of a 1955 biopic, the title song of which, sung by Doris Day, is included also. The package includes a very thorough discography and an excellent liner note, and is highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2019Great singing and wonderful old songs.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2023This release contains two CDs; unfortunately both of them are not Ruth Etting. The second CD is labeled correctly, but all of the music on that CD is that of Mantovani and His Orchestra, not Ruth Etting. I requested a replacement for the Ruth Etting release. But -- the second copy had the same error. I now have two copies of Disc 1 (Ruth Etting), and two copies of Mantovani (Disc 2). I was not required to return the first set of discs.

LeselieseReviewed in Germany on February 13, 20195.0 out of 5 stars wunderschöne Musik

WeatherbirdReviewed in Japan on October 14, 20064.0 out of 5 stars 1920
BARRY HORTONReviewed in the United Kingdom on March 28, 20195.0 out of 5 stars Ruth Etting-truly America’s Sweetheart.
Ruth Etting is surely the best singer of her era and this is a great compilation of her songs. Highly recommended for those who love songs from that golden era of the 20s and 30s.
