"Even without seeing her face, I know that the woman standing at the waters edge is desperately sad."
The first third of the book is the love story of Emerson and Mereki, a first time emotional and gripping love story. I love these types of stories so much, if the author can do a good job of capturing what it’s like to fall in love the first time, these books can rank up there at the very top of my favorites list.
Emerson comes from a broken home, with an evil mother and a horrible step brother. When Mereki becomes a first hand witness to this he decides that Emerson needs a friend more than the bullies do and they quickly settle into a routine together. Ki fishes and Emerson works on her art. The back and fourth between the two characters is beautiful and subtle but you can see the love blossoming in every exchange they have: They never had a chance, it’s heartbreaking and wonderful.
"As long as we're together, I'll smile forever"
They hold off the love feelings for each other until their senior year in high school, seventeen years old, when they just can’t fight it anymore. A first kiss down by the river in their special spot together and she is lost to him forever.
Emerson wants to be an artist and Ki an architect, they want to get out of this one horse town, away from all the people that do nothing but drag them down. Emerson is already so talented, for her birthday Ki gets her a table at the art festival so she can try and sell some of her drawings, and she does! But later that night a terrible event happens changing the course of everything and everyone’s lives forever. I know it sound’s corny but I'm telling you.
Skip forward about four and a half years or so, things aren’t so great for Emerson and Ki. High tensions at home are leaving her drained and feeling incredibly distant from her partner, and now there is a super nice super hottie that wants to take her to coffee.
It took awhile for me to warm up to Josh, the character that falls in love with Emerson later in the novel. By the end though your not really sure who you are rooting for, you love all of them so much. For those wondering I’m going to call this a quasi love triangle and leave it at that. Give it a try even if you hate them, this story is so lovely and compelling.
At times I was reading with a lump in my throat, by the end I was reading through tears. The characters were so well written and they definitely made you feel all the feels. There were a few sexy parts: they were steamy but not overdone. I was not expecting the ending, when we came to the reveal I had to read it twice to make sure I hadn’t missed anything.
One thing that drives me crazy in books is when authors over do it one describing the characters, what they look like and what they are wearing. These things in no way connect me with them at all. This book was excellent in leaving those things out of the narration, and I loved it! The only way that I knew there were racial tensions going on with the couple in the beginning was because of the scenes with the bullies. This is just something that really stood out to me while reading. And last, my favorite quote from the book was definitely this truth:
"For a minute or a lifetime, some people try to clip your wings, whole others help you learn to fly."
Also, their Aussies. So, Yeah. Hotties, Mate.
This is exactly just the kind of book I like to read. What do I say, this was really, really, really good. I can’t even ...I’m just... wow totally not what I was expecting, I’m totally shocked with the little twist, but I loved it. I think my heart has just been aching, twisted, pulled apart, beat up, and put back together. I loved every character, and it’s impossible not to. Growing up Emerson didn’t have the best at home, an unloving mother and a awful and mean stepbrother is what she had. But thanks to Mereki a good hearted and loving boy from school, she was blessed. When they were younger they quickly became friends and just as quickly as their friendship had grown, so did their feelings and next, they were in love.
“He was my compass and, with him by my side, I would never be lost again.”
Also along with Mereki’s great friendship she also had his loving parents who cared for her. It really is sad to have a mother that truly doesn’t seem to care for you. After their many years of friendship dreams and school, they always dreamed of moving away together to follow their dreams and to do what they loved.
But what happens when, an unexpected event happens, changing things, and takes their brightness and joy that they both once had away? Changing the path that they once wanted to take, and later bringing in a new person named Josh who’s just as sweet a really good hearted as Mereki, to the mix.
“There’s no timeframe or road map for the grieving process. We all do it differently, and no one should judge anyone else for finding their own path.”
Your heart truly melts and breaks for Emerson, and you can’t help but read each page with shock or excitement waiting to find out what’s going to happen next. I know, I did and I also had myself thinking, more than once “no!” what is she doing, and “what is she thinking” and yet also feeling torn. Decisions eventually have to be made, but your not sure how they’re going to turn out. It really has you on the edge being pulled both ways. Which do you choose, this way or that? I love both Mereki and Josh, but if I truly had to choose I think I would go with Mereki. He was her first and there’s so many sweet memories between them. But then again I do fell for Josh lol. Decisions decisions, again your heart is a mess.
Mereki is the best, Emerson ever had when she was little. I don’t think she would of truly made it if it wasn’t for him, and again you can’t forget his loving parents.
Josh, is also so wonderful and really sweet and caring with a big heart. And you can’t help but fall in love with him to.
“No one is just like me and no one is just like you.”
This book was really good and the first book, I have read by this author. I think it’s going to stick with me for a really long time. And it’s definitely for sure, not going to be the last by this author that I read. And last if you haven’t read it what are you thinking? You need to get started like, right now. And if I could I would truly give this more than just the aloud five stars, I really think it’s worth way more than that.
From page one Kate pulls at your heart strings with this beautiful and emotional story of a very unusual love triangle.
Emerson and Mereki's love story is achingly innocent and precious, but as you are enveloped by it's warmth, there is also a dark and strong sense of foreboding that is woven into this story, that keeps you on edge as their past and present reveal the tragedy that unfolds.
With the introduction of the developing relationship with Josh, I felt both hope and anguish for Emerson, and really struggled not to break down and sob knowing what was coming, but I remained still so invested in their story and Kate's beautiful depiction it did not spoil the obvious outcome for me.
You have broken my heart and left me gutted Ms Sterritt, but you have also cleansed my soul with this stunning story!
This was my first book of Kate's and I am now a devoted fan!

I only have one regret. I didn't go in blind and I wish to god I had - so if I have one piece of advice, as much as possible, do that. I can't stress that enough. You will love the story even more if you do. This story would have blown my mind if I'd taken my own advice.
It still gets a big 4 stars from me because it grabbed my attention and kept me reading right until I reluctantly completed it. Totally and utterly gorgeous.
The characters are memorable, loveable and so honest with thee feelings. A story that slowly unfolds but flows easily, captivating and poignant. The author takes you on breathtaking adventure that is heartfelt, an honest portrayal of an uplifting and powerful love story. Well written and edited, to the point and beautifully told, this novel will grab your heart and won't let go.
I absolutely loved this book and have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending it. A MUST read. Thank you KS 😀
I will say no more as blind is definitely best and I hope other viewers respect the author by not revealing anything.
