From the action-filled first chapter when Marco draws his sword to save Susanna in distress to the closing pages when he reaches for his same sword under very different circumstances, I found myself completely invested in the blossoming, complicated relationship of these two lovers and the challenges they face. Their romance builds against all odds: his noble standing, her stoic poverty; her caution due to all the pain she has suffered at the hands of his family, all combining to prevent them being together. But we are rooting for them all the way.
The attention to period detail is meticulous: from the pewter cups to the Florentine alleys to Susanna's hovel-like dwelling, everything is rendered perfectly. The author dedicated enormous patience and research to create a story that unfolds freely and fluidly. For committed readers of historical romance and for those like me who stumbled upon this gem, you will not be disappointed. Guaranteed endless hours of wonderful escape. I didn't want it to end.

A romance that comes to life in Renaissance Florence with a cast of vividly realized characters. Two lovers coming from very different backgrounds defy social convention and expectations and we stick with them, rooting for them all the way.
Bravo to Ms. Spence!
